Vizio E701i-A3 no picture or sound, flashing light

I have a 3 year old Vizio E701i-A3 with no picture or sound, and an irregular, dim flashing backlight.

It seems like this TV comes up here a lot, unfortunately, but I don't see these symptoms. Here are the details:
    • Powers on, shows V logo clearly and normally
    • Starts flashing. There was a horrible buzz noise, but now it's gone
    • Cannot turn off the TV. Must be unplugged
    • No buttons work on tv or remote
    • Here's the weird one: The TV did this once before, but it went away, and the TV worked fine again for about a year. Then we moved it, and it started again.

It seems like it might be power related, but I'm not sure. I've tried the trick of unplugging and holding power for 30 seconds, to no avail. Can anyone tell me what might be happening?

I would make sure all screws are tight securing all your boards.
I assume no responsibility for any stupid suggestions I might post.

You have LED backlight strips that are shorted.

Would that cause it to do nothing at all, though, other than dim flashing? There's no sound either (except the brief buzzing).

The thing that confuses me is that the V logo that appears at startup looks perfectly normal. It's properly lit and clear. I agree it sounds like a short though, since it worked again for a year after "healing" from the first round.

Here is a video of the symptoms from when it was making the sounds. Sorry for the low quality, but it's the best I have right now.

I'll go with jeremy1976 and suggest backlights failing. When cold they may work and as they heat up (quick process) shut down the PSU and then nothing will work.

Sorry for the terrible video quality. When I say, "I have", I really mean "a friend with no electronics knowledge has". I'll see if he has something that wasn't filmed on a potato.

So backlights are going to cause tv not to turn off or buttons not to work? Have you checked for loose grounding screws on your boards?

No not at all...these are symptoms of a malfunctioning Main Bd. However, I have seen where the PSU malfunction seem to produce symptoms of a malfunctioning Main Bd. To rule out the PSU the 'self-test' must be applied but on performing a 'self-test' the backlights must remain connected thereby verifying working backlight, too.

did you try any of the "unplug cables test" outline in the many threads you read?

Vizio M65-E0 No Picture, No Sound
                      by ggil44
Hi I inherited a Vizio M65-E0 that isn't working. It must have been dropped on the corner because I found that the infrared circuit had a capacitor with one end broken off of the board and some green corrosion around the plug to the main board. I re-soldered the capacitor and cleaned the corrosion well and tried turning the M65-E0 on and I was successful. My problem is that while the back lights come on and appear to perform local dimming there is no picture or sound. It kind of looks like you are looking at the TV through a very dense fog, where changing the input on the remote will change bright...

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
                      by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                      Assuming...

Samsung TV model UE50TU: rebooting, backlight, sound, but no picture
                      by TR103
                      Hi, I have a Samsung UE50TU with:
                      - sound and backlight, but no picture
                      - when it arrived, it had a picture for a few seconds
                      - it keeps rebooting
                      - without ribbon cable between the two panel boards, it does not reboot but I have no picture
                      - without cable between mainboard and lcd panel, it does not reboot (but obviously i have no picture)
                      - when i try a tape fix, its keeps rebooting, unless I tape off pin 1 (the innermost pin). In that case it does not reboot but I have no picture.

                      - without cable between mainboard and lcd panel and with a jumpered...

Samsung UN60EH6000F Black Screen, Backlight and Sound Good. Power Cycle Returns Picture
                      by Mgiffune
I have a 60 inch Samsung UN60EH6000F flatscreen TV. The screen went black a few months ago Sound is good, backlight is good, no menu. I replaced the TCon board with a used board purchased from Ebay. It worked fine for a 3-4 months, then the screen started ‘fading' back. Once again, sound is good, backlight is good, no menu. However, this time the picture looks fine for about 10-15 minutes, then fades back. If I power cycle the TV, the display reappears, for another 10-15 minutes, then fades black again. Repeatable ever time.

I ordered a supposedly ‘new' Tcon board this time, and
                      ...

Samsung UE60KU6079 backlight okay mainboard responsive, no picture, no sound
                      by Ierwin
                      Hello everyone,
Ive got a UE60KU6079 on the workbench that is giving me some headaches trying to troubleshoot.
The previous owner stated that there had been white dots on the screen which from the description sounded like some lenses fell of the backlight LEDs.
He had opened the TV from the back, trying to get to the backlight, supposedly gave up, reassebled everything and gave the TV to me.
I expected the worst like ripped COF cables or a cracked panel but could not find anything like that yet.
Anyway I still fully expect that there has been something seriously damaged...
