    Troubleshooting TVs...

    This is just a general question, but where do you start troubleshooting TVs? I have a TV that turns on (the green power light comes on), has sound (static), but no picture. I can provide the specific make/model if needed.

    I opened it up, checked the fuses with an ohm meter (both okay), checked all of the caps (none bloated or blown open), now I am at a loss.

    What are the most common problems that go along with 'no picture'? A bad picture tube? Is there a 'picture tube controller'? I know I probably sound retarded, so if it's better to take this to a pro, then I will.

    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

      Static is only with the tuner in out of band or dead, or have no 33V tuning voltage. Have you confirmed it is not in guide plus mode?

      Do you have video inputs? Is it working and clear pics?

          i have a Hyundai HPT4240 plasma tv, and need advice on what type of caps i need for it. they are square and bluemaybe about an inch long and half as wide, i think they are polypropylene,they are marked..SHINSHIN P1.0 (K)+-10% 630V. they are in the power supply.also maybe where i may be able to buy them. thank you in advance

              These are not the issues.

              Are you getting pic on the panel (getting menu, press the menu), works on any other inputs?

                  a follow up. i found having warmed the caps up. the set will work first time.
                  as normaly it will turn on then off. maybe bad electrolite?. i have read that sometimes caps loose there ability to opperate normaly when cold. or dried out. anyone confirm? thanks

                      Certain these are the ones? Because there are electrolytic capacitor near by.

                          i have read that these are the most likely wizard. along with an electrolitic. (50v 10uf) i have read that this one goes open. so heating it wont fix that one i think.so maybe its these ones?

                              are the crt heaters lit?
                              hear hv static when you turn it on?
                              turn up g2 and see what you get.
                              working on a jvc now that not only blanks video but shuts down with no vert out.
                              keeps from burning a line in the tube.

                                  confirmed the cap with the prob i isolated it (with the help of a cardboard tube) and the set worked.

                                      ok i ask again. anyone know where i can get these caps? SHINSHIN P1.0 (K)+-10% 630V 1 uF.....for Hyundai HPT4240 . the other cap i can get easy.

                                          1uF? 630V? Is it plastic dip or retangle?

                                              wizard they are rectangle, blue and have SHINSHIN P1.0 (K)+-10% 630V on the top. from what i have read they are 1uf.

                                                  It's probably either a Metalized Polyester cap or Polypropylene cap.

                                                  630 volts is a common voltage for those cap types.

                                                  They are usually pretty reliable (way more reliable than lytics) but with Chinachina stamped on it I'm sure that's the reason it failed.

                                                  Does it have any UL ratings on it? If so it's a line X or Y cap these are special caps.

                                                      Hi guys! I realized you have a lot of knowledge here so i am hoping you could point me in right direction with my odd issue.

                                                      The Tv is a Philips 58PUS8545/12, it had no picture but working backlights.

                                                      Original T-con:
                                                      Opened the Tv and tested to unplug one ribbon cable at a time. With this test i could see that i got fine picture on both halves as long as there was only one ribbon cable connected, with two connected picture were gone.

                                                      First replacement T-con:

                                                      I thought it might be t-con and ordered new t-con from china(supposedly tested)...

                                                      This was my main TV for the last 6 years. I'm not inclined to throw out a $2600 TV so quickly so I'm trying to investigate the issue.

                                                      Problem
                                                      TV was disconnected from power for 6 months during construction. When I plugged it yesterday picture was fine, after 30 seconds it dimmed then started developing horizontal lines, picture then starts to ghost vertically until it degrades into vertical streaks. TV always displays a perfect picture when cold. I can unplug TV for 5 minutes and plug it back in and picture is restored for 20 seconds. I can also keep it in standby mode...

                                                      Hi, I have a Samsung UE50TU with:
                                                      - sound and backlight, but no picture
                                                      - when it arrived, it had a picture for a few seconds
                                                      - it keeps rebooting
                                                      - without ribbon cable between the two panel boards, it does not reboot but I have no picture
                                                      - without cable between mainboard and lcd panel, it does not reboot (but obviously i have no picture)
                                                      - when i try a tape fix, its keeps rebooting, unless I tape off pin 1 (the innermost pin). In that case it does not reboot but I have no picture.

                                                      I have a 60 inch Samsung UN60EH6000F flatscreen TV. The screen went black a few months ago Sound is good, backlight is good, no menu. I replaced the TCon board with a used board purchased from Ebay. It worked fine for a 3-4 months, then the screen started β€˜fading' back. Once again, sound is good, backlight is good, no menu. However, this time the picture looks fine for about 10-15 minutes, then fades back. If I power cycle the TV, the display reappears, for another 10-15 minutes, then fades black again. Repeatable ever time.

                                                      I managed to get my hands on a rough condition B&K 707 for "the best price" because it was not working. It's my first tube tester and I'm really wanting to get it up and running. I downloaded that manual that has the schematics and tested every resistor and capacitor and replaced the ones that failed. I replaced the missing 83 rectifier tube with a used but tested-good one. I also have a number 80 rectifier tube that I have used in tests before I found the 83 tube.
