Sony DVD player no longer spins

My Sony DVP-S330 worked perfectly I used it two months ago.

Then I try to use it today and after putting a disc in I hear noises and then "No Disc". So I open t up and try again and the disc is not even spinning up unless I use my finger to manually spin it less than an eighth of a turn before it spins on its own. I had a Technics CD player that did this years ago but it eventually stopped. Visually the internal PSU looked okay (no burns or bulges) but you never know.
    Is this a caps issue?

it seems laser is dirty or worn(first laser needs to see media in order for motor to spin...i dunno why does motor turn at all(when you help it) if it never recognizes the disc?).

try cleaning it, and if it doesn't help it's probably junk.

another option can be that's it's a problem with spindle motos(one driving the cd
    http://books.google.com/books?id=OsX...5VsTgkqZuSNRxQ
) and because it doesn't start reading cannot comence.
come to think of it i should of write this first in this reply.

you didn't say if you helpi it start restores normal player operation, ie does it play the dics after that.
if it still doesn't, then it should be optical pickup(laser) problem.
spindle motor you can try lubricating.

      The laser is completely fine.
If I flip a disc over and put it in it won't even try to spin up (laser can't see anything) however if it is inserted the right way it "knows" that there is a disc in the drive and will try to spin up and read from it however since it can't spin up it will just say "No Disc" until you eject the tray and close it again, at which point the cycle start over again.

Also, once I use my finger to manually spin it up it will continue to work fine unless it is stopped again by either reaching the end of the disc or by pressing the stop button.

Had the same issue on an old Philips CD Player.
Spindle motor (the one that spins the CD) was a little bit hard-running (like there's a bit honey inside).
after i put a new motor in it worked fine again..

however... i was curious and carefully opened up the "stuck" motor...
the bearings had clogged up with something.. after cleaning and a drop of Ballistol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballistol) it worked fine again..

          Motor.

Specifically the motor's commutor segment gaps is filled with crap and shorting it out. It's spun by active control of voltages less than 3V at low current so it is easy to defeat the player's spin up if the motor is worn or dirt commutor segments.

Fix is replace that DC motor with exact replacement or take it apart and scrape gaps clean, be gentle during the repair and EVEN more gentle on reassembly because of very delicate brushes fingers. It is no carbon brushes, it's alloy spring leafs (3 fingers per brush).

i had a dreamcast that had a brush in the spindle motor flipped backwards wile i was playing it, it sounded horrible before it went to a complete stop. i did dive in and fixed it. it looks like it was a manufacturing defect with the brush then it just happening by chance. what it looked like was one of the leads of the brush was broken which cut into the pads on the spindle and eventually caught the brush and flipped it.

i eventually replaced it with a new motor. but the motor i repaired stil worked but wasn't aligned correctly since i took the motor out of the housing and had issues reading disks that worked fine before.

Well that is all I need to know Wiziard.
I'll first look into how much it costs to replace the motor and if that is too much, I'll go at fixing it myself.

yeah, thank wizard, because that's exactly opposite of what me and scenic said, isn't it?

                i said

it's unfair to thank him alone because he said same thing as we did.

as for repair, i would first try a drop of wd40: it should clean and lubricate it...
if it doesn't open it, if yo mess it uo, change it...
if you like that player so much, that is...

cost of replacing it? is anybody repairing those anymore anyway?
any repair will probably cost more than new machine...

It just seems so strange that it's doing this as when I use my finger to spin it, I don't sense any resistance.

Re: Sony DVD player no longer spins

Correct. Very common symptom. At our work, we usually flick the sluggish/unresponsive spindle motor, if it takes off and at least starts playing. It is motor's commutor gaps filled with conductive dirt.

I have fixed few myself where I can't be bothered to replace the motor to get by.

                    Cheers, Wizard

Re: Sony DVD player no longer spins

As Wizard has said - the symptoms you have are of a worn motor. Its a common occurance on audio CD players, less so on DVD players as its just as cheap these days to use a brushless motor, but it still happens.

IF you can't get a replacement (and its about a 95% chance you can't), remove the motor from the PCB and squirt some switch cleaner or similar into the back and spin the motor a few times by hand. That often gets a few more years use out of it.

Hmmm, I'll have to see what is in the junk drawer.

i also have a Sony dvp and it starts to spin and than stops and says no disc i suspect the laser is bad.
