    42LG5020 solarised/washed out - T420HW02 v0

    Evening all.

Had the issue as described in the title, and ordered a replacement T-CON from eBay which I've just hooked up now.

It's quite odd in that the moment the TV comes on the colours look fine but then the colours fade and the picture just looks awful.

I've attached the readings on Tom's spreadsheet and it's apparent that I've bought a duff board, would you agree?

It does look like it. Is it an AS15 chip on the tcon ?
Sometimes I see them with a thermal pad on the top and sometimes they don't.
I always put a pad on top now and I've not had a replacement come back yet
I have one fail in test as I'd not attached the metal shield correctly and it wasn't making contact with the top of the thermal pad, so maybe heat pays a part in their lifespan.

I'm pretty much 100% that it is an AS15; it has a thermal pad on it.

Tried it with both the metal shielding on and off (though can only get readings with it off naturally!)

As it seems that these are few and far between, are there any equivalent/alternative T-CONs that'll serve as a suitable replacement?

It's not uncommon to get faulty parts described as tested and working perfectly.
I'd send it back for a refund, and look to buy a replacement or get your original failed Tcon repaired.

If you bought it through Ebay you do have 14 days to return it as faulty/not working. If you did not buy through Ebay but paid via Paypal again you have some redress.

Should be fine as went through eBay and paid with PayPal.

Will just tell them the IC is duff as the voltages aren't consistent with what's expected.

I'm not keen on it tbh, taking my chances on the £9 board on ebay I mentioned - should be here tomorrow. Posting back the other one as they'll accept the return no questions.

Why not you could make the bloody thing more relible in the long run getting the service done. You could of searched on how to test as15 which would of gave you a better idea. Keep us updated

                      Aaaand the £9 board's a bust too.

This time it's because the sockets for the ribbon cables are narrower than the T420HW02 that was in it; must be for a different revision of the 42LG5020.

So that's going back, and the I've contacted the seller of the first to take him up on the offer of fixing the one I bought, and sending my original board to get £10 refunded.

                      Watch this space guys!!

im sure that ebay listing is from a member of this site £15.00 inc return postage is a good price in my opinion for a new ic fitted on your own board.

                            Yeah, additional problem though.

At one point I accidentally let the original board slip when removing it and it went under the power board. Managed to retrieve it safely, but there was a certain aroma that came from it. Checked it again and it introduced vertical lines into the mix so I reckon that little misadventure made a small problem a lot bigger!

Fortunately in this case the seller understood what I meant about the IC's voltages not being correct - they'll replace the IC and send back.

Surface mounted components and my Michael J Fox style of soldering don't make for good bedfellows!

OK, got it back, installed and turned on, no picture at all!

Read the voltages as before but they're OK, says some other things have failed though...

If it means anything, the larger IC on the board is now red hot to the touch, the AS15 runs a lot cooler.

Any suggestions? I'm obviously going to have to send it back; I'm not giving up on this at all!

How can it be a shorted panel when I got a picture on my original board and the one sent with a bad AS15? This was barely days ago so it's unlikely to have just gone like that.

The CM2681A-KQ could fry an egg on it, and if that's gone the result is no picture.

I still get sound as I have a Fire Stick plugged in to test.

So the tcon that slipped under the power board and smelled funny was the one you sent for repair of the AS15 ?

I was told I'd be getting back the one I paid for; not the one I originally had.

If he's sent back the one I originally had, there's going to be hell to pay - I was specifically told I'd get the one I bought.

Just emailed now to find out.
