    Sony KDL-46S2000 - "clicks", 8 red blinks

This forum has been super helpful for me and has helped me fix my own TV as well as help a couple of friends with diagnosing their TVs. Thanks so much!

I received a "dead" Sony KDL-46S2000 from a co-worker. When you press power, it makes a few click type sounds, then gives 8 red blinks.
From all the info I've found, blinking red 8x is an IC5000 issue (?). From what I'm reading the problem involves the main board (B board, BU board - ?).

What I'd like to know is do I have to find & purchase another complete board? or is there a clear, straightforward way to test/repair the problem/issue on this board? (capacitors, voltage regulators, etc)
I'm pretty much an electronics repair novice, but if armed with the necessary info, I have several buddies who can help with the repair stuff (testing, soldering, etc).

Any guidance/help in getting this unit up & running would be much appreciated. Thanks!

      Bud-
Thanks so much for the service links!
I looked over all the PDF manuals related to the KDL-46S2000.

The triage & troubleshooting guide was very helpful & easy to follow, but all the flow charts just ended in complete board replacement. This helped confirm that I was targeting the correct board, but doesn't offer any details about testing/repair on the board itself.

The service manual seems to have more of the type of info needed for testing/repair, but as an electronics novice, the board schematics in the manual are a bit over my head.

Any advice/insight on where to start? Are there common failure points/components to target? Anything step-by-step (check this, check that) would be very helpful for someone like me.

      Thanks!

I think you are out of luck on trying to replace the TRIDENT Video processor:
        Page 27:
        TRIDENT (Scan Converter) Protection (8X)
There are no other components within the TV that can cause an 8X protection mode indication. The 8X protection mode indicates a TRIDENT video processor internal failure, specifically the failure of the Scan Converter section. If the 8X indication occurs, replace the BU-Board to repair the failure.

Well dang- that's about as clear as it gets.
Thanks Bud, I'll begin the hunt for a replacement board.
          Have a great week!

I wonder how much that board is and if it is commonly failed board.

Re: Sony KDL-46S2000 - "clicks", 8 red blinks

OK- so I found a replacement board on ebay. I put it in, made all my connections, etc.
Now when I plug in the power cord, it doesn't do any red blinks anymore, but it now makes a click-click sound every 5-6 seconds like it's trying to power on, but can't (?). The green power light on the front blinks off & on every time it clicks.
It doesn't seem to do anything when I press the power button on the set.

              Any thoughts/ideas?
Since it's no longer blinking 8 red blinks, is that problem solved? Is the replacement board a keeper?
Or does this new problem mean that the board is no good?

              Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

It does not sound like the new board is good, I would expect some kind of error codes. Is this board warranty that it is working board?
The old board when you have 8X you can still use the power switch to turn it off, right? And this one does not.

Ugh. OK - this is just weird. I put the original board back in & now I get nothing.
No green power light, no blinking reds, no response from the power button - nothing.
                  So frustrating.

If you are now getting nothing you probably either haven't reconnected something, or have now blown a fuse.

Do you have a multimeter to test for voltages exiting the power supply?
Fixed so far 12 lcd's , 1 plasmas, 5 monitors, 0 dlp's (plan to keep the dlps at 0). and 3 atx power supplies, and 2 motherboards.

OK, OK, there's nothing to see here.
The issue is just me being a doofus.
The wires and tiny connector from the power button were tucked under a much larger set of wiring & I just didn't see it & didn't reconnect it.
Sorry for the boneheaded move there...

Got the original board to give 8 blinks as before.
I can turn the set on & off using the power button with the replacement board in, but it still just does the click-click like it's trying to power on.
The power light is steady green, except during the clicking - it turns off & then returns to steady green. No picture - it doesn't appear to actually turn on.

I don't have any kind of meter available.
My understanding is the power board was replaced in this TV from my co-worker right before I was trying to help repair it. That was the initial attempt to fix it.

                      Thanks.

You will need the digital meter to do some Voltage testing next.

Once I have it, what should I be testing?

I am not sure if Budm has something specific in mind for you to test, but generally when I get a faulty tv, I test all the connectors going in and out of the power supply except if there are high powered / highly insulated wires for a backlight (the set your working on though has a separate backlight board though that is beneath the power supply)

The first 2 links in budm's signature (scroll to top of page to see his signature under his first post) explain the basics of how to test voltages (where to stick what probe...)

The 2 thick wires coming in at bottom of board should read 120v on ac setting, there are 2 large connectors at the top of the power supply that should have markings on the board next to each wire indicating what DC voltage they should be, but most of those voltages will not be on if the set is off. Usually there is a voltage with the letters sb after it indicating standby / always on voltage.
Fixed so far 12 lcd's , 1 plasmas, 5 monitors, 0 dlp's (plan to keep the dlps at 0). and 3 atx power supplies, and 2 motherboards.

Got the multimeter, took readings. All the measurements seem to match the values on the board pretty closely. Right at 120 in from power cord to power supply. All marked 18V areas reading right at 18 going off the board. Several 3.3 reading 3.3.
The only thing I did notice was that on the harness from power supply to main board there were 2 points marked UN REG 10.5. These seemed to be reading high - 11.9ish and these would drop dramatically whenever the "click-click" happens, then jump back up. Those marked 3.3 had a similar drop. Everything else seemed to stay pretty constant.

I was also able to get a hold of the original power supply that was replaced. I switched the 2 power supplies & had same results with both.

Does this mean the replacement main board I received is bad? Or is there something else I should be looking at?
It's just confusing to me that the 8 blinks went away, but the set is still not working. I really appreciate all your help!

"UN REG 10.5" It is UNREGULATED 10.5V power supply so it can vary quite a bit.

So I plan to order another replacement main board & see if I end up with different or identical results.
Just not sure what else I should be checking/testing.

I'll post results once I try the next main board.

Any additional thoughts or insights as to why it may not be turning completely on are welcome.
Thanks again for all your help!

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

Hi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't
Thought the battery was dead, so i plugged in the charger then tried to power on, the power LED blinked once, charged LED still orange, unplugged the charger, plugged in again and I noticed the "magic smoke" smell, so i unplugged the charger, removed the back cover and saw the blown IC (the "magic...

                                    Hi there!

I have a Sony Bravia KDL-40Z4500 which shows a colored vertical stripes pattern when turning on, with a central black shadow that slowly dissipates within the first 10 seconds.

Photo of the situation after the black shadow dissipates:

After this behavior the red LED will blink 9 times, then pause for a bit, and blink again 9 times, in a loop.

I checked the manual (available here) and this corresponds to "HFR error", quoting from the manual:

                                    > This indicates HFR Communication error. [ HFR Communication...

                                    Sony xbr-65x900c main board issues?
                                    by jb_Bak
Hey guys great forum glad to have found it. I bought a Sony XBR 65X900C cheaply because it didn't work. No signs of life at all not even a light/led. All I hear is a brief high voltage sound when I throw the power to it.

Didn't see any obvious signs of damage so right away started checking voltages. This is what I see:
Power Board Connector that goes to Main board
                                    CN6401
                                    Pin 01 NC
                                    Pin 02 NC
                                    Pin 03 "BL_ON": 0V
                                    Pin 04 "N/C"
                                    Pin 05 "STBY 3.3V": 3.5V
                                    Pin 06 "GND": N/C
                                    Pin 07 "AC_OFF"...

All left and right refers to looking from rear of TV (or looking from front with TV upside down)
                                    • TV came with vertical bars and no image. Found faulty TVS on left buffer board. Also replaced T-Con (may have damaged the original while hot air removing components, board has slight warp) and have full image but few horizontal lines on the screen. Some of the lines appears to be 2 pixel tall while others are 1 pixel tall.
                                    • Disconnecting left and right buffer board potentially reveals problems on both sides with different signals (unless this T-Con require jumper like Samsung FB_TRDY1&3) Fault
