Bricked TC-P42U2 - Seeking Tech Advice

    Greetings all,

I've got a 5 YO Panasonic TC-P42U2 that was working fine until yesterday. At first there was no picture but the TV menu and red LED power button light was still visible, a few hours later, no signs of life AT ALL. completely bricked. Haven't attempted any troubleshooting at all other than disconnecting the SS board cables, reconnecting and giving it another go, but nothing. Something note worthy is that in the 5 years that I've owned this set, I've never seen it do a self poweroff until the day I started having issues... correlation?

I've seen quite a bit of threads floating around the webs regarding this make and model, but folks usually have some flashing lights to help troublshoot the problem. I have nothing other than a brick, so I don't know if that makes things more or less difficult to troubleshoot.

My very uneducated guess tells me that it's the power board, but I honestly don't know. I've attached an image of the tv with the back panel removed.

So what do you guys think? And please feel free to ask any questions! Thanks!

I would think power board or main board here is the service manual to help you sort it out until Tom chimes in

You could start checking fuses with an ohm meter, they should all read less than an ohm, also in the service manual should be a description of wiring harnesses to unplug and get the set to go into auto test if the main board is at fault

If you have no front panel LED and yesterday you lost picture but front LED was on and still had OSD i.e menus etc, I'd be thinking the A board is dead. get a hair dryer and warm the A-board up and see if anything happens.

Failing that, check for 5v stdby voltage, if present I'd again say A-board as it then generates 3.3v from this and then tiurns on the front LED.

That TNPA5105 SC board would have some value if you scrap this. Finding and A board for this series could be quite challenging, ModuslinkPTS do repairs but I think $150 mark, you'll have to have a look.

If you wanted to be real crazy, there may be a way to integrate a P42G20 main but unless it was a cracked screen scrapper going cheap with all boards and cables, there'd be little to gain.

No autotest with the Pannys I'm afraid, no separate logic board like the sammys or lg

You're talking to a complete amateur here. I have a multimeter at my disposal so I can try a few of your suggestions and report back, but can you go into details on where to go to check for 5v stdby voltage?

Caleb- thanks for the guide, will have a read.

read the manual, identify danger, locate 5v stdby , plug TV in, turn on at wall, measure in DCv , the 5v standby voltage at A-board is connector A7 pin 1 , red probe on that and blk to chassis gnd

tw2005- took me a minute to locate connector A7 pin1. Meter reads 4.97 DCv

So that would be the A board I just tested? Can you guys recommend a place where I could possibly track one down? I checked eBay but not seeing relevant results and most of the boards I'm seeing on there are used.

This may be a matter of personal preference, but depending on how costly these boards are, is it even worth fixing? I paid $600 for the set 5 years back, and if I have to drop another $200 on a board... tw2005 did mention they are hard to find.

I think near enough all plasma are worth fixing as they are no longer manufactured and they provide the best picture quality. LED are the main now and they fail left right and centre.

TNPH0831AG (txna1ljuus.) should be the correct board

I had a real close at the images of this

                      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PANASONIC...item1c53d29eed

It says for 42S2, Revision AB. AB revision is 46" S2

At the close ups I can tell the images are not S2. S2 has a soft touch power button on the side panel.

In the images there is no power button on the side.

At the close up of where the suffix code matrix is, again the jumpers do not match either 42S2(no suffix) or 46S2 (revision AB)

So either this seller has used a stock photo they have for another item they've sold or

it is in fact revision AG which is the one you should have.

Still very pricey for a used board but they are near impossible to find.

you'd have to contact them and get the revision checked and point out what is in the photos.

Alternative, moduslinkpts, $130 and send yours in. maybe wait out and see if there's any other check to be 100%.

It's too late here and I can't rest to think but wondering if the front LED board(k board)should be checked in case it's shorted but I would think that's low probability.

might be more than you can figure out but you have the manual.

                      http://www.moduslinkptstvboards.com/txn-a1ljuus/

From what i've read, modus will most likely test your board first before repair.

if you go that way, I'd give them the symptoms on how it failed, loss of pic, OSD, then dead, no standby LED.

Oh, and the TNPA5105 boards tend to fail eventually, another impossible board to get at times but repairable at Modus. luck of the draw if or when.

If you love plasmas, not many options now if any still in production it'd be LG or Samsung for new and I don't keep up with the news there but I'd expect they have or will cease making plasma too.

tw2005- my board reads TNPH0831A3, so I think the ebay seller mad a mistake in his description or possibly used a stock photo as you pointed out... but his board is also TNPH0831A3, so it should be a correct match?

What's a fair price for a used board like this? I'll make him an offer but I don't want to lowball the guy.

I have the back panel off and a manual, so I'll see if I can figure out how to test the LED board.

Thank you for the different perspectives, all of you have been a tremendous help!

                          Yes correct board.

Start with that low offer and haggle! When the Samsung 8k series came out I found someone selling 2 brand new.... Managed to haggle him down to £700 each if I took the pair.... Next day listed and sold them both for £1200 each on eBay! So... Always go for that lower offer first!

Nice little profit you made for yourself there. I'm definitely going to haggle with the guy if I go that route. Now that I know what the problem is, I'm trying to decide if I want to drop another $150 on this plasma or go with a 4K TV. My partner is in on the decision making as well so we'll have to see what she thinks

Look across these forums for failed LEDs

No , not correct. do not go by the PCB,PRINT FOR CORRECT IDENTIFICATION.

I've given the correct information and advice and repair/return is cheaper

Ignore the 3A, not part of the equation

I've given the correct information and advice and repair/return is cheaper

Sorry about that, I may have misread some of your information, I'll read over. BTW- I also emailed the guy asking for clarification and he basically got back to me with, "what's a soft touch power button?"

Back to square one. I guess I can contact Modus too see what my options are.

                                      Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice or opinions on what to do with a monitor issue I’ve run into. Apologies in advance is this crossovers a few forum categories.

I have a Dell U3425WE, which I've recently replaced with another model. That said, the original unit is still fully functional in terms of the display — it works perfectly over HDMI and DisplayPort. However, the USB-C and Thunderbolt 4 ports have stopped functioning correctly. The Issue:
                                      • The 90W Thunderbolt 4 port (circled in the photo) no longer charges or powers any device, including laptops or MacBooks.

Seeking Advice on Enhancing Heatsink for Main Processor on SAMSUNG TV Motherboard
                                      by Ven
                                      Hello everyone,

I'm looking to upgrade the heatsink on the main processor of my TV's motherboard for better cooling performance.

The current heatsink is a square-shaped one (2.8cm x 2.8cn) with a basic design, and I believe a more efficient heatsink could help with thermal management and potentially extend the life of the TV.

I'd appreciate any advice on the best type of heatsink to use, specific product recommendations, and tips for installation.

If you've done a similar upgrade, I'd love to hear about your experience and any challenges you...
