LG PDP42 goes dim after a few minutes since new ZSUS IPM

    Hi,
originally this plasma has very bad colored flickering frost pixels everywhere, and the ZSUS IPM was ticking erratically. I've installed a new ZSUS IPM module today and after switching on, all was well. Great picture. Assumed that was it, fixed... About 10 minutes later the screen went very dim/washed out with a subtle kind of back light flicker now and again. I let the TV cool down and tried again, thankfully picture went back to normal. This time it only lasted a couple of minutes though before going washed out again.

I've taken the ZSUS out and checked the underside of the board for any bad joints. To be safe i flowed all of the solder connections all over the underside of the board. Refitted and no different. Dim/washed out after a couple of minutes.

The ZSUS sure makes a nice loud hum with it's new IPM. I'm not entirely sure if it's normally that loud, since i have been given this tv that was being junked.

I have a funny feeling if i keep turning the set on, the new IPM is going to go poof! Which is why i'm not running it for long each time i test. So i'm hunting for a bit of advice on the best things to start looking at. I have plenty of tools and an oscilloscope. My knowledge though is in laptop and desktop pc's unfortunately. TV's are something I've only recently started tinkering with.

I'm assuming this is entirely a ZSUS issue? since the ZSUS deals with picture brightness?

Any help appreciated. Fitting the IPM was a pig so id rather get a bit of gen from someone who has got more knowledge than risk letting it go bang!

Sounds like your new ipm may be failing open already so yes you will need another one.

Just started probing the board for shorts and yep, SUS_OUT and VS are now direct short to GND. I guess the last time it went dim it must have took it's last breath, Fuse has gone open too.

Do you think i got a bad IPM considering it worked for a well over 10 minutes initially or might there be some serious problems with the board?

Those ipm's are a crapshoot because most are "pulls" - no telling where they are at in their life cycle. There's probably nothing wrong with your zsus board but wouldn't hurt to check the 5v and 18v lines for excess ripple.

Most likely you got a bad IPM.
