Re: Sony KDL-55EX640 (630) DEAD SET

    good update lol

I'm happy with how it has resolved so far. When I initially opened it and saw the state the power and main boards were in I was expecting the worst from the panel (although it looked in good shape cosmetically) as well.

I noticed if I swapped the ends of the second bigger LVDS cable it made a difference to the weird speckles, still something wrong, but less noticeable somehow. I found a little nick in the edge partway along the cable, didn't look like it made it in to any of the conductors, but I taped it up anyway and cleaned all of the connectors and cable ends.

If that cable was good, plugging the end that previously went to the T-CON to the mainboard shouldn't have caused any change in image right?

In addition, after reassembling, I also think I had something shorting out around one of the bonds because there was a bar which changed from normal image to flickering bar. I reseated everything correctly and that has gone, touching on the bond for that part of the panel didn't seem to reintroduce this fault, so I think all good at this stage.

Put it all back together and the strange red bits are gone.
Will need to order the S101 IC and work out that zener value next. Some other monitors with same IC had a 5.6V zener in that location.

Thanks for your help once again BUDM.

Photo doesn't do 55" justice. This thing is large!

I am curious as to what to output pad of the S101 IC is at this stage, if it is normally HIGH or normally LOW for the TV to function, and may be if the Zener Voltage is wrong and caused the IC to short out since it monitors the AC line Voltage.
I am glad is working now.

Pin 1 (Delay output) FPO pin, open Drain output.
Pin 4 (Non-delay output) NDFPO, open Drain output.
They are open Drain output, so right now without the IC in place, then pin 1 and pin 4 pads should show as HIGH due to the pull-up resistors.

Sorry to jump in the thread. So glad you got yours working, now lets try mine. I have the same exact tv with no standby light. I get the 3.3v on pin 1 of CN2 leaving the power supply. I also get the 3.3v on the main board. I traced power to the switch and press the switch and I see the voltage drop when button is pressed and goes back to 3.3v when I let go. I am stuck and need some help. I found the tv on trash day, and it will be a good fix.

Thanks, it's the good pictures that made a big difference for me to be able to help.

@junkmale, so not even any error blinking at all? It is obvious that some how the main board is still sending the PS-ON otherwise you will not have the PFC Boosted Voltage of 392VDC on the legs of the main filter cap.

OK, please report all the pin Voltages with pin names for all the pins on the connector of the power supply board that goes back to the main board when TV is plugged in and when the power switch is activated so we can see what are missing.

So the PWR-ON is stuck on, but at the same time there is no 12V or 12V for T-CON.
You do have Main board problem and also the 12V in the power supply board.
You may want to read this thread since he has the symptom like yours, no LED.

Is this your TV or you got it from someone else worked on it before you? I wonder if the flashing the firmware will help.

i found the tv outside on trash day, favorite way to shop, it doesnt look as if anyone has done anything to it. I thought about firmware, but I cant load it because I can't get the tv to turn on. I will read the post you linked, thanks.

Read that post before, but was unable to locate the main board...anywhere to buy these parts, anything for this tv is hard to locate. After seeing this updated post I thought to give it a try. But I will spend the money for the new board if I have to, I mean I got the tv free.

The screen does not have to light up to update firmware, that is the good thing about the SONY.

I read some where, I cannot find that thread right now, on badcaps that the firmware can be updated even the screen is not on, but I am not sure if it will work with this model and since you do not even have any indicator LED so the main board may be dead.

Hello to everyone in this wonderful forum.
I have this SONY LCD TV KDL_46R473a
                                            PSU GL5 APS350 :1-888-122- 12
                                            MAINBOARD FY13_EU IP-012C101-4010
black screen ,no STB no life almost death.
on PS all the required volts are present 394V on the main cap and those on cold side 12.41V,3.45 and 3.45 are on
                                            Also 3,5,and 12v are on.
nothing happens if i disconnect the PSU from the mainboard as on Samsung because here i think the mainboard gives the signal to the ps.
don't know what to do next all suggestions and advice are very welcome...

                                            Hi,
My Sony W905 started to turn itself off an on every few minutes and blinking 8 times red in standby. A few minutes later the tv was completely dead.
I can only hear the click of the PSU when attaching/detaching the power cable. No standby LED.

                                            Any advice? Thanks!

Calculating ESR from tan delta -- tan delta's dependence on capacitance
                                            by Junkrepair
I'm finally recapping my Soyo K7VX6 motherboard (aka KT600 Dragon Ultra) and replacing Sacon SZ-series caps. The Sacon SZ datasheet provides a spec for tan delta, but not for ESR, while the candidate replacement caps are specified in terms of ESR.

I found this nice little description of the conversion:

                                            Calculating capacitor ESR from Tan(delta)

It mentions that a general spec for tan delta has to be adjusted for the specific capacitance before plugging tan delta into the formula...
