Insignia NSL 32Q 10A picture problems

Hi, I was hoping to get some guidance on how to start to troubleshoot this TV. I'm very new to this forum and have limited experience working on electronics but am open to any help I can get. I've read the threads and posts on this model of TV and so far haven't seen any of the symptoms that this TV has been displaying. It was working fine and one day the left half of the display went black. I would turn the TV off and in a few minutes turn it back on and it was fine for a few minutes to a couple hours and then again would start to fade. I hope it's something fairly simple and inexpensive to fix, but if it's too much I will start looking for another TV.

Hmm, that does not sound good, as it could be a bad LCD panel. Lets hope not though.

Hi tom66, thanks for replying to my post/question. I have attached a photo, not real great quality, but it shows how the left half of the display is darker than the right. I didn't mention before but when I started having problems with the TV that I unplugged it and it has been sitting for about 3 months unused. Since then the symptoms are different in that when I power it up now I can't even go through the menu options or change the input. It will power on, give the "Please wait..." dialog box and when it disappears, then nothing else. I've had the back cover off and looked at the components and nothing appears to be burnt or damaged.

Hmm, ok that is better. That looks more like a backlight problem. That's probably fixable.

Do you remember if the Please Wait dialog appeared before, but went away after maybe 10 seconds, and you could use the TV? A common fault with LCD backlight circuits is called "2 seconds to black", this is where the TV backlight will come on for 2 seconds then go off due to a fault being detected. In this case one half of the panel is failing to light so the circuit is detecting this malfunction and shutting down. As far as the rest of the TV is concerned everything is working so if you shone a bright light at the screen you might be able to see a picture, although this depends on the type of LCD panel in your set.

Can you get some pictures of the parts inside of your set so we can start making suggestions.

Do you have or can you borrow a digital multimeter to do some tests?

OK, here are some pics of the boards and components inside the TV. The TV is doing just what you said, it will show the "Please wait" for about 2 seconds and then goes dark. Before it would stay on for about 10 seconds and I could use it normally until the left side started to go dark. I don't have a digital multimeter but I can get one tomorrow.

Ok, the first step is

This power board:

In the top middle of the board there's a large capacitor. It's probably marked something like 150uF 450V. Can you see this?

VERY CAREFULLY, set your meter to the highest DC voltage range (500, 600 or 1000V) and probe ACROSS this capacitor leads. i.e. red probe one end, black the other. Exactly which probe does not matter. Tell us what you see.

- Do NOT touch anything else on the power board as this is the primary side and there is a shock hazard due to mains voltage.
- Do NOT short the capacitor or you will blow the mains fuse and have to replace that, it looks soldered in to me.

Since it is the primary side I advise you have someone watch you while you do this as there is a risk you could slip.

I tested the largest capacitor on the board. The markings are on the side that is glued to the board but the reading was 168 VDC.

I just checked the voltage on the large capacitor and when in standby it's at 171 and with power on it is 410.

I've thoroughly looked over all the boards front and back and don't see any burnt areas or bad caps. I have read through the other posts regarding this model of TV and from what I can ascertain, I need to replace the inverter panel. Since only half the screen shows up when it is turned on, I'm guessing that this would control what is displayed. I have found a used board on E-bay and am considering getting it and trying it out. Would this be the best choice to try to fix this TV?

In the event that this might help someone I wanted to follow up on my last post. My TV's fixed with the new (used from Ebay) back light inverter panel. It cost about $20 with free shipping. The problem was that the left half of the screen started going black. The "please wait" dialog box appeared for only 2 seconds indicating a problem existed. Everything else looked fine. Hope this is helpful.
