Samsung UN46D6420 Vertical Lines top 1/3 of screen. Ghosting sometimes.

    Good day,

I am trying to determine the cause of what is causing the lines and ghosting on my Samsung tv. The lines are always present. Ghosting can be seen 1% of the time. The line and ghosts only appear on the top 1/3 of the screen. I have not taken the tv apart yet so I only have pictures of the screen.

There is also a round bright spot in the right edge at the bottom where the lines start showing. Sometimes the spot is black and shows no picture.

Any help determine the problem is greatly appreciated.

This is almost certainly going to be a bad LCD panel and not repairable. I'm pretty sure that's going to be the consensus on it from everyone. Probably not worth wasting any time on.

Unfortunately the LCD panel in your TV has failed. This will not be economical to repair.

This is a very well known problem with D-series Samsung LED-backlit LCD TVs. You MIGHT with persistence be able to get Samsung to compensate you on a replacement. However, doing so may be like trying to get blood out of a stone, and they'll usually only give you credit on another Samsung product (given the ES and F series LED-LCD TVs also have a lot of panel failures, it's probably worth avoiding them in future.)

Thank you for the very quick responses. I just went back to reread my post and already two replies. Not the answer I was hoping for, but it is what it is. Thanks for the tip regarding Samsung's. Any brand recommendations?

          In order "best" to "OK"

LED LCD TV: Panasonic, Sharp (>50" only, lower is rebadged), LG, Vizio (higher end models only, >$500)
Plasma TV: Panasonic (discontinued - try getting ex-stock model), LG, or Samsung (51" F8500 is good)

Plasma far better than LED LCD TV for reliability and picture quality. Uses about 30% more power on average, but this is negligible compared to cost savings (plasma usually cheaper than LED-LCD TV.)

Note that in a shop, plasma may look dim. Any TV will look dim in a brightly lit shop. LED TVs are always turned to max, but plasma is always on energy save mode. It is best to try and compare against the lighting conditions in your house, where plasma works very well and has great dark image contrast, and where you can turn off the energy save mode.

Tom, I had seen you post this list a few times and thought I would mention this. The Sharp model 60E69U here in the sates is also a rebadge. Same inside as a Westinghouse and Element model of the same size. Just thought I'd let you know as you were stating over 50" on those. Anyway, I've seen several failed already and it's a 2013 model.

Ugh. Yeah, trust Sharp to do that. Basically every Sharp, Toshiba, JVC, Sanyo, Hitachi in this country is a shitty rebadge model. You pay extra for these name brands and there's no difference between them and the supermarket names. (That doesn't mean that the supermarket brands are any good!) It leaves a sour taste in your mouth.

You got that right. I can pretty much tell immediately looking at the back of one if it's a rebadge now. Basically, if it has a cultraview control board (easy to recognize by all the jacks facing downward and it one straight line), then it's a piece of junk.

Common on all the brands you have listed above plus a number of cheaper 'off brand' type sets.

Same in the UK with the Vestel sets. Since about 2010 they've all used one of two input plate layouts. If you see one of them, you know to run away...

Just powered on today and a few white horizontal lines, but no Samsung splash screen. Also no sound from the tv anymore. I see the backlight on when I shut off all the lights. I have taken apart the tv but not sure what to check first.

I had this TV and it had a shorted panel.
I would remove the stand and the metal cover and try only one ribbon at a time ,from the T-con to panel. If one half shows perfect screen and the other side no, then the panel is bad.

Well, it's "more bad"... if that makes any sense... it's probably died entirely. Typical of Samsung LED-LCD TV.

Took off the right panel ribbon cable, powered on the TV, the left side of the panel showed up. Put back the right panel ribbon, removed the left panel ribbon, powered on the TV, and no picture, only backlight.

Is this still looking like a bad panel?

Is there anything that can be replaced and repaired? I don't mind taking the TV apart, but if it is the panel and it I've read it isn't worth the money to replace then I'll just purchase another non-Samsung TV.

The test you've just performed indicates a bad panel.

                              UPDATE.

So I was bored today and decided to take apart the TV even further thinking I might as well learn from this and see what is inside. I got to the cable ribbons located at the bottom of the screen. I touched each of the ribbons down, I think 4 or 6 of them, pushing them down toward the circuit boards under them. With the screen faced down I powered on the TV and I got clear cable TV signal. The lines in the picture that I first posted were gone. Hmmm.

I am thinking it is a loose cable that is causing the my problems. Is it okay to put clear scotch tape over the ribbon to keep it pressed down? Does this cable heat up and will this cause a fire hazard?

You have discovered a "tab bond" problem. This is common, and is usually why these panels fail.

Yes you can secure the cables, but generally, the success rate is poor at best. Some people have had good results using padding material to apply pressure. It's hit and miss at best. I've never had good luck with the larger panels so I always consider any large panel with tab failure to be dead.

I heave heard of people getting decent results using Thermal Pads between the tab bond and frame to put some pressure on the tab bonds - They will also help keep it a little cooler going forward so may be a little more robust?

As Tom has said though, some tab bond "Fixes" last a few minutes, some last a few years so its is very hit and miss. Ultimately you have nothing to lose though so... give it a go!

Budm just had quick look through and was curious; would it be better to cut the thermal pad and stack them rathern than fold the same peice over?

i would imagine stacking them would allow you to have a more uniform pressure across the front edge where you want it on top of the tab bond...

Good guide all the same though.

They have stickyness to it and tend to form into one stack pretty well, so I never did try to cut them and stack them, the one from DIDGIKEY is thicker so it only needs one layer, the one from DEX is thinner so I had to folder them to get the right thickness.
