    Crystal Audio Micro-HD DVB-T MPEG-4 Tuner

    Hello,

Since this category also states Video Sources, i thought this is the correct place to post. If not, please inform me to remove.

    A little intro :

Since the transition from Analog to DVB-T signal in Greece happened somewhat late (2-3 years ago) , lots of people i know asked me what set-top box to get to receive the new DVB-T channels.

Crystal Audio is a Greek Company that designs and manufactures electronics from Home Cinema Speakers to DVB-T Tuners and from Media Players to Wireless A/V transmitters.

So , i chose to promote "our own" company instead getting some foreign design. I got almost 9-10 devices for me and people i know, all of them worked flawlessly till a month ago, afaik.

The only one that stopped working is the one that my aunt had. It has never powered off for the period of 2 years and 2 months that she operates it.
It was getting somewhat hot and even though she was advised to power off the device when not used, she had it on 365/24/7.

So, after this time, she left for vacation and removed it (!) from power. After getting back she asked me to connect it again as she did not remember how to do it.

When i tried to, only the power led lit, the signal led was not lighting as it should. I tried to get in the menu, but failed.

After trying several things and since it was off warranty, i decided to open it to see what had failed inside.

The photo below shows the internals ( notice that there are 5 caps and 2 coils removed , in order to have access to clean the pcb) :

And here some of the components removed ( notice the brown substance on one of the caps ) :

I tried to clead the remaining brown stain on the PCB with IPA, but i had no success.

The caps top sides show no distortion, the bottom sides also show no distortion, so is the brown substance leak from the caps ,

or is it a discolored glue-like substance, the one that manufacturers use to stop components from oscillating and making noise ?

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Thank you in advance!

    Cheers!

    it's glue,
scrape it off with a flat screwdriver or something.
    it can short stuff out.

the actual problem is probably caps in the psu area on the left.
the ones with the rings on the rubber are known to be junk btw.

So, it is just glue ? It didn't seem like cap fluid, but i had to ask...

As for the caps, you mean the big ones in the 2nd photo ? Their logo is "SW" in an ellipse, while the ones that are black&gold are of a brand named "Decon".

I measured their Impedance ( not having any expensive equipment though ) and were measured inside limits.

Local electronics store has not opened yet after summer vacation, so i'll have to wait a couple of days before i can get new caps.

well i'd suspect small ones first if it didnt start,
        but it starts afaik,
        so it could be any.

but running fine until it cools is a sign of dry caps.
maybe heating them could narrow it down.

I tried to measure capacity with my DMM, the ones with the circles on the bottom cover give from 0.42nF to 17.3nF...the smaller one measures exactly 100.3μF just like it should, so i suppose you were right about them...

I'll start from replacing these first...

I have to wait till Monday...everyone still on vacation here...

in my case the promblem solved changing this capacitor, showed in the picture:1000 μf - 10v.

In my case, i got almost all capacitors for 2.50 Euro, so i changed them all.

I only got the attached photo, where i tested the temperature of the main chip (ambient ~35°C)

Most of the caps had very high ESR values and 2-3 capacitors had low Capacitance.

I think this crystal might be dead, i have only boardview giving me this: XTAL 32.768KHZ 12.5PF/20PPM.

                Samsung PN51F8500AFXZA broke off the tuner's F connector, can't get tuner de-soldered
                by DXseekerMO
I can hear Fred Sanford now...."YOU BIG DUMMY".....I pulled the "F" connector out of the tuner by accident. The tuner number is BN40-00248B. Low and behold I had a scrap board with tuner number BN40-00248A. Although the tuner is different (according to Encompass.com) it's footprint on the board is exactly the same as the 248B so I decided to de-solder the tuner off the scrap board to see what I was getting in to.

As you can see in the picture the terminals and solder pads are super small. No matter what I tried I could not get either the terminals or support...

Does Changing Out Caps In A Tuner Effect FM Reception
                by Mark R
"TQ" Subject at hand is a Marantz 120 tuner. The tuner lit up but no output. Recapped the entire unit. Before it was working fine tuning in Stereo and Mono. Now it just about tunes Stereo and some of the mono stations are weak. Nothing else was changed. When you do hit a stereo station the stereo lamp will come on but flickers as it's trying to hold the MPX signal.

I don't see how bringing the unit back with new caps checked by my Sencore LC103 would effect the FM section. Every Value is as it was from the factory?

                Any Thoughts?

Zotac GTX 1050 Ti Mini ZT-P10510A-10L Replacement Crystal
                by OakleyDAR
                HI,

I'm looking to replace the 27MHz crystal on this board as it isn't generating the signal. I thought it would be easy to identify a suitable replacement as there are clear markings on the crystal, but it appears I was wrong as Google gives nothing. Bad photo attached, but it has X27.0000 and 16AP1 on the casing. It appears to be a 3225 package, but looking through suppliers there are lots of different things like capacitance, tolerance, active or passive, etc. that need to be considered. Could anyone help identify a suitable replacement please?

                Thanks....

Question on microprocessor crystal oscillator circuit
                by Keshenatech1
I'm troubleshooting a reel controller board for an IGT slot machine. The digital section seems to be dead. There is no USB communication, PC or utility program for flashing firmware do not see it but they do see good/working boards. I noticed the waveform on the crystal is very erratic/asymmetrical/glitchy on the bad one compared to the nice even waveform on a good board. My question is would this most likely be caused by a bad crystal or something gone bad in the circuit loading it down? I'm attaching a couple pictures of my scope probing the good and bad boads.
