    Worst soldering job ever??

Just opened up this Samsung plasma I bought off ebay. I should have run away when I saw all the missing screws and the misaligned casing. Seller admitted she'd had a look inside herself but "didn't know" where all the missing screws were. I managed to reduce the price a bit at that point but after having driven a bit of a way to pick up decided I might be able to salvage something out of it anyway and took it home. I wasn't quite prepared for what I'd find inside.

This PSU doesn't even usually need the caps doing. It's usually the FETs.

Can't decide whether to drive back and dump it on her doorstep or try to get it going.

It's probably tied with this from a Panasonic plasma. Difference being, this was done by an electronics repair shop.

        But that is pretty bad!!

Well, I don't think it's the worst soldering job because there's nothing f...ing soldered.

            Certainly the worst desoldering job.

I wonder if they're use to working wth pop rivets? They may have been better off just drilling the bastards out.

At least it would look neat.

            Should be a nice challenge

Edit: beg your pardon, missed the 2 blobs in pic 2. Wonder how many milliwatts the iron was.

Yeah, I'm actually impressed how bad of a job she did on this one. I especially like how she left the leads long like that with some even crossing over each other. I wonder if she actually applied voltage to this repair job.

Anyway I decided to give it a go and put in some new caps, connecting the leads to nearby contacts. Lo and behold she actually fired up. Standby and start-up tone but no picture and no Vs and then I smelled a burny smell and started to feel warm. One of the heatsinks had turned into a pretty good radiator. Sure enough I think some of the FETs are shorted and some diodes too. Oh well, now that I've started..

Think that is just dried flux residue, or perhaps someone used plumber's solder!
(They sure didn't use an electronics soldering iron to do this...)

The guy I got this set from told me he has been fixing TVs for years. I think he should stay off the booze and stop shaking while he solders.

                          Dang!

Someone must have used a heavy/hot iron to eat the pads like that!

Panel must be worth it if you want to take on that beast! heh good luck!

I have a Samsung 46" with bad joints on usual caps, the guy admitted he had solder new caps but didn't say how bad a job he'd done, I dare not clean them up and resolder as it's just a bit messy and besides it works and has been fine for months but I know I should really.

wonder if the leads touched/shorted to ground or other supplies and it went bang!!!, and thats why the back went on and put on the bay, send the seller some side cutters for the leads.

                                    WOW!

That reminds me of my early pre-teen years when I first picked up a soldering iron. But even then, I don't think it took me that many tries to get better. And at least I've always been careful to NEVER leave long leads. That's one of the things I KNEW will cause a problem - especially bending them around like that. Mind you, this was before YouTube, Google, and all of that (think late 90's). Well, Google was around, I think, but finding GOOD information online back then on how to solder (or do anything else, really), wasn't as easy as it is now. So I learned soldering pretty much all by myself. If that lady just spend a good 10 minutes online watching some YouTube videos, she would have probably done this soldering job just okay.
