    Question about UE60JU6800K backlight power.

    Hi all,

    got my hands on a Samsung UE60JU6800K, initially it apparently had a bunch of white circles on screen which I confirmed was due to loose diffusers when I opened the set up and found a mountain of them at the bottom. The person I got if from stored the TV unused for a lengthy period after this so when I got it the backlight was completely gone. I took out the strips and almost all of the LED's have a crack on the yellow phosphor form the center of the LED outward, the ones that don't have this crack seem to work still (Maybe due to humidity after a long period?). Anyways I went ahead and ordered a new strip but In the meantime I'd like to confirm that the power board for the TV (BN44-00860A) is supplying the correct backlight voltages to ensure that it didn't fry the strip. The board has an Input/Output table for voltages which I'll include as an attachment, the backlight output section contains 2D and 3D which I have no idea what they could be. The two filter capacitors next to the BLU SMPS out have 320VDC on them with no strip attached and the voltage starts to drop slowly until a faint click is heard and the voltage shoots back up to 320VDC and I have checked all surrounding FETs and Diodes, as for output on CH1 and CH2, there is only 1.2VDC after power on, now I know most TV's shut off their BLU output if they do not find a strip, but I'm interested in how this happens, does the power board signal to the main board which turns of it's BLU_ON pin? Is it possible for me to enable the output without a strip attached by forcing the BLU_ON high or will that damage something?

    On a Samsung power supply board like this the BLon is pulled automatically high due to a pull up resistor forcing the backlight on when there is no main board attached to the power supply.
    We used to “force” the backlight or the main board on by taking something around 1k resistor and wire it for example between stby and BLon also maybe the DIM pin, etc. But like I said before, that's not needed anymore if you just power the PSU up by itself on this model. You get the 320V reading because you don't have any backlights attached to the main board. On top of that the backlight is current controlled, not voltage controlled.

      The backlight is monitored and controlled by a controller (led driver) and if the backlight is faulty or absent (no load), the controller blocks the output voltage...
