So instead of a long strip of LEDs it has just a few behind the panel? Interesting, not seen that myself either...any clue on manufacturing date?

The guy that brought it to me, said it was less than a year old.

I have seen them in Samsung, it is back-lit (deeper chassis) instead of edge-lit (thinner chassis, edge-lit just like monitor). With back-lit, they can do zone dimming better than edge-lit.
I also use them for light box and for taking pictures of the circuit boards.

I had heard of it, but only on premium TV, like LE40A950, called local dimming, not available except on a few exclusive models. Some edge lit TV have 5xVertical and 2xHorizontal dimming, must produce awful halo effect though.

This one probably lights them all up at same brightness regardless.

I would like to do a hack like "budm" did ,And use the chassis to drive another panel. I couldn't find any info on the net. The chassis supply's 12v to panel and 40 v to the led's
