    Toshiba Regza 42HL167 no picture

    I picked up a dead Toshiba 42HL167 HDTV a while back and have tinkered with it off and on.

    When I turn it on, the backlights kick on, a second later the picture appears, then it goes completely dark. Then a second or two later the backlights kick back on again, then after another second the picture appears, then dark again, and it stays dark.

    At first I thought it was just a backlight failure, but now I'm realizing that it isn't just the backlights. When the screen goes dark it is also no longer sending a picture signal to the panel. I verified this by sending a very bright image to it and checking with a flashlight. Nothing. Totally black. Plus, when the backlight cycles the second time, the picture isn't there immediately.

    When it has gone dark I can still switch inputs. That doesn't trigger the screen to come back on but if I hit the input button a few times and power cycle the TV I can see it has switched to another input when the screen flashes on briefly.

    I updated the firmware with no effect.

    Voltages out of the power supply are within spec. All the caps are Nichicon and none appear to be bulged out.

    My thought is the main board has failed (seine board as I've seen it called, Toshiba pe0361), and the picture flashing is just a symptom of that. That board does control both the LCD itself and the backlights. One of the connections from that board to the primary inverter board goes to 3V when the backlight turns on, then drops to 0 when the backlights kick off. I've been tempted to jumper that wire to another 3V source to see if the backlights then stay on or not.

    Before I go spend upwards of $80 on a replacement used board I wanted to see if you experts had any other ideas first, or whether this is even worth doing on this TV as it may be prone to repeat failure.

    If I remember well, I had one of these and it was the T-con.

      Same symptoms on yours? Everything does seem to point to it.

        It's been a while, but if I remember correctly, it was working for a while and it would loose the video signal.
        I should have a thread here somewhere.

          OK cool. I'll probably buy a replacement board and hope that fixes it. Everything seems to point to that being the problem. Although it seems that it is a fairly regular issue with this TV so I wonder how long it'll fix it seeing it would be a used part...

            I know this is an old thread but I wish to continue it - I picked up the same model and have nearly the same problem. I have tried a new T-CON (2 in fact), a tuner, and a power supply all with no change to the symptoms.

            As long as no signal is applied it appears normal - menu functions normally, inputs can be selected, all looks well. Apply a signal Ant, Cable, video, pc and in about 2-3 seconds the screen looks like someone pours black in on it from the bottom and it flows UP. Power off/on same results. Sound is NOT affected.

            I connected a PC and got a "Video signal not supported" message until I went to shutdown the pc and then, just before going black, I did get the pc screen to show. Also tried a VCR with video inputs, and the HDMI inputs - ALL have the same result - image for 2-3 seconds then fades to black.

            One person told me it sounds like a defective panel and I'm not sure I know what that means - It doesnt seem to fit the symptoms.

            One other symptom which I THINK I see but is hard to confirm is that for the few seconds when it does show a picture, the motion seems to FREEZE just before the black ink starts. Like the video is being turned off.

            I hate to scrap it, but if it truly can't be fixed there is no reason to have it take up space.

            Thanks for any help.

              Toshiba 37AV500A Regza TV good power supply no sound no picture

              Hi Everyone,

              I'm working on a Toshiba 37AV500A Regza TV.

              The issue:
              TV was working picture and sound went out. Green stand by light stayed on, It will respond to the power button being pressed (goes in and out of standby)
              The TV will very intermittently work for around 40 mins then stop. This doesn't seem to matter if its hot/cold unplugged for a while etc.

              I checked the PSU voltages and everything looked good.
              No bulging caps or signs of heat.

              24v aud = 24.41v
              12v = 11.98v
              5v = 5.062
