Samsung LN46C600 - Audio ok but no video. Flashlight Test shows source (no backlight)

I have a Samsung LN46C600 (www.amazon.com/dp/B00453KFD0) for which the sound works perfectly fine, but the source video doesn't appear. If I do the flashlight-in-a-dark-room test, I can indeed see the picture really really faintly, so there is just no backlight.

After a ton of researching and watching shopjimmy.com YouTube videos, I ordered a brand new Inverter (eBay Link) and installed it myself. However, still no picture, darn.

Other people say that the capacitors on these TVs fail, but none of mine are bulging or popped.

How would you proceed with this?

Do you possess a digital multimeter?

I do not, but am willing to take suggestions.

      Will one of these work?
      1. INNOVA 3300 Hands-free Digital Multimeter (10 MegOhm)
      2. LCD Digital Ohm VOLT Meter AC DC Voltmeter Multimeter
      3. Etekcity Digital LCD Multimeter (XL-830L)

I don't want a super-gung-ho powerful one, which is why I am looking at the top-reviewed more inexpensive ones.

      Advice and suggestions are welcome.

One of the last two. They are the same meter (just different logos) so just buy the cheapest. I don't recommend the 1st one because it is limited to 500VDC, and you could be measuring around 400~420V, which is quite close to the limit.

Thank you. I will order the second one.

I ordered it yesterday and it will arrive tomorrow. Gotta love Amazon Prime shipping!

Once it arrives, where should I check?

I am new to multimeters (obviously) so putting it in newbie terms would be appreciated.

The first check would be the voltage across the large 450V capacitors.

That means the two tiny little pins at the bottom of the capacitors, AND while the TV is turned on, correct?

Yes. Careful, very high voltage, up to around 420V DC. Although, only need to check one, they are both in parallel.

So I will place one lead on one of the pins, where does the other lead go?

The other pin, of the same device.

Oh, you meant only need to check one capacitor, not check only one pin. Got it. Glad I asked!

BN44-00341B from TOM66. This board has pull-up resistors, so if you unplug the cable between power supply and the main board, the backlights should come on when you plug TV into the AC outlet.

With the left board unplugged (that is the main board, correct?) from the middle board, the backlight still only comes on for a brief second, and then turns off permanently.

                            Should it stay turned on?

If so, does that mean the problem is deeper?

                              OK!!!!!

                              I think I'm done.

I just got my multimeter. I plugged in the power to the TV and held the leads up to the capacitor. I held it for a few seconds and all it said was 0.

                              0... 0...

All of a sudden, BOOM. I hear a loud POP and I see a spark.

Hooooooly crap. That was enough to A) Scare the crap out of me enough to not want to attempt to fix my TV anymore and B) I probably just damaged the power supply anyway.

                              Holy sh......

So... Anyone know where to dump a used TV? Can I just drop it at Best Buy for recycling?

                                Hello everyone,

I'm new and I cannot create a thread. I thought using this open thread I could get some help.

I have a Samsung TV model LN46C600F3FXZA and I found out that the capacitor on the power supply (BN44-0341B) bulged on the side closer to the heatsink (http://i61.tinypic.com/14munpl.jpg).

I have been searching the internet and I cannot seem to find this exact capacitor.
                                http://i57.tinypic.com/i4rfwn.jpg

I found a capacitor with similar specifications on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=321302469158

and I was wondering if it will work so I can replace the 2W474K.

If the capacitor I found on ebay does not work, can someone let me know what other capacitor I can purchase so I can fix my tv

                                Thanks

That cap is 0.47uF 450V or higher rating. I would go with higher voltage.

Thank you so much for the info. I will go ahead and order both 630v and 450v. I will solder the 630v first and hopefully that will make my TV backlight come on again, and I will have the 450v as backup =D

I will let you know. Once again, thanks.

                                      Hello budm,

I want to thank you for the info that you provided me for the .47uF capacitors. I did order the 630v, first one on the link, but I could not wait, I was desperate to get the TV working. What I did was contacted a local store here in Orlando, Florida (Little Electronic Shop) that someone recommended me, and the guy had the exact capacitor that came on the power supply board for the LN46C600 Samsung TV. He solder it for me, I came home, installed the power supply, and wala, the TV has been working fine.

In case someone has the same issue, the initial problem was the TV had sound, but no picture.

I will keep the capacitor I ordered just in case something happens to the one solder on the power board.
