    Possible Purchase: LG 37LC7D

Owner said, "it's a dark glowing black when you turn it on", which
means the backlight appears to be working.

But when I asked if he can get the menu to show up at all, and if there is sound, he said:

"No it seems like it is just on stand by. No sound or anything will happen. If you constantly turn it off and on and unplug it and plug it back in it will work eventually but it takes a few days of constant turning on and off power."

It sounds like bad caps on the power supply section that feeds the main
board, right? The backlight inverter sounds like it's working.

What do you guys think? $15 or so?

Between this and this I'm becoming fairly intimate with this PSU board!

Backlight inverter is on the main PSU board. If the backlight is coming on then it would suggest the main MICOM IC is running and trying to start the set up. I'd say STBY_5V is ok (which is regulated to 3.3V for the MICOM). Not many caps on STBY_5V that would get much stress anyway.

There are 3.3V and 5V regulators switched by the MICON that power all of the signal processing circuits. There's also a switched 12V which I'm pretty sure only goes to the amplifier circuits. There is a bunch of electros on the 12V, 5V and 3.3V rails so if they were faulty it could definitely cause some intermittent operation like that.

It's a pretty straightforward power supply design so wouldn't be difficult to repair if that is indeed the issue. For $15 it's worth a punt. It's not a bad picture from this set either.
