Magnavox Plasma TV 42mf231d/17 No Picture Need Help

I got this broken plasma TV for free off craigslist, Magnavox/Phillips 42mf231d/17. I am trying to repair it, if it is even worth fixing.

When I plug the TV in, the front blue LED turns on for a few seconds, then shuts off. When I press the power button, the blue LED lights up and a click from the back can be heard, and that's it, no picture, nothing else. When I press the power button again, the blue LED turns off. The remote the original owner gave me (claims it is the original remote) is able to turn the TV on using either the mute key or a number key. The only key on the remote that turns the TV off is the mute button. The power key on the remote doesn't do anything. When I turned the TV on the first time at home, there were random red, blue, and green pixels on the screen that behaved wierd.

Inspection of the boards revealed 1 bulging 100uF 50V 105C capacitor on the y main board, which was replaced by one with the same capacitance and voltage rating, but with 85C rating because that's what radio shack had. The new capacitor had no effect on the TV.

I also tried checking voltages on the power supply like Vscan,Vg, etc, and all values were correct. I also reinserted all cable connectors I could find.

I also can't access the blinking SDM feature as explained in the service manual. I shorted the 2 SDM points with a screwdriver. The only effect I got was when the front LED was off, when I shorted the SDM the blue LED would come on with a click for a few seconds, and then shut off.

Then yesterday, while turning the TV on and off, smoke started coming from somewhere near the power button, and there was a very bad smell.

At this point, is this 7 year old plasma TV even worth fixing? Is it beyond repair? Any ideas on how to fix it or what else can be done?

    Thanks

This line of TVs isn't one of my favorites to repair. They tend to have PSU, Y-main, and Y-buffer issues that can be expensive to fix and maintain. If you're looking for a learning experience, this one will probably be a good, err, or bad lesson If you're looking for a good TV that won't cost much to fix and maintain, I'd move on to another TV. There are plenty out there.

Does anyone have any other advice? Or does everyone agree that this isn't worth repairing?

To add: If your Y-Sus blew, you're most likely looking at buying one or both replacement buffers along with repairing the Y-Sus. If you buy used replacement buffers, there's a good chance one or both will blow in short order, taking your Y-Sus out with them. NEW buffers for this TV are normally not cheap.

Ive got one really close a 42mf230A/37, though with different symptoms. I might be interested in some boards if they are good. Mine has an issue with the power supply, but these are notorious for bad buffers taking out the ymain, replacements are more than it is worth. Check out coppell tv repair blog for the low down on this series.

Yep, that's what I experienced. (1) The 42MF231D/17 I have sitting on the floor in a storage area had a bad PSU. I tried to replace several burned components and a couple others in circuit with the fried components - didn't work, so I put it aside. (2) I later acquired a Philips TV that uses the same Y-Sus and buffers; it had a bad Y-main and a shorted buffer, so I had the Y-main repaired and I replaced the buffer with a working buffer from the 42MF231D/17. The TV worked great for a few days, so I sold it on CL. I saw it again on CL two months later (I recognized the person's info in the ad) - picture was out.

I'll try selling it whole for now. Thanks very much for the help.
