No, but I feel like giving you a friendly slap. I was almost going to ask if everything was soldered right but seemed like a very slim chance and almost insulting.

Looking at the cct it's the DG302s that surround that led or feed it, was almost going to get you to take them off again and we test them properly but I am very relieved.

Ok, the lines will be due to poorly seated ribbons from the panel to the SN.

Where you have lines they will line up with the offending connector. release the lever and grab the ribbon both ends and gently insert, you will feel it wedge and then it goes in a little more. There are usually nothches on the sides to help indicate they are in straight.

Compare the ribbons that have no lines to the bad ones to help give you a guide. be patient with it and do this powered off, reseat and secure and power up agin to recheck.

Then when it's all good upload a picture of this wonderful TV working, it makes me feel good

i'm guessing that's a symptom of bad ribbon cable connections?

Yes , read my preceding post, power TV off, then re adjust, looks like only the 2 connectors that line up with the lines don't touch anything else because the rest looks perfect.

          Nearly there buddy.

Here it is.... When I get to Australia I'll have to stop by and buy you a beer or two... Many many thanks, and I hope others will be able to follow this thread.

Word of advice to other novices: label all the screws when you take off the back of the set... tape them to a piece of paper and write the label name next to them.... I used packing tape, and just pushed the screws through the paper when I was ready for them. Made putting it back together after these two weeks VERY easy.

What an unbelievable journey... I would have never had the courage to attempt this without badcaps.net

Nice one! When I repaired the SC board for the panel like this one, it turned from 14 blinks to 8 blinks and I was so annoyed.. Until half an hour later I realized I forgot to connect the cable to the ctrl board lol.

The ride was well worth the $20

Intermittent and induced faults are always challenging especially the introduced ones without realising it.

looking back at it we can have a laugh lookiing for broken part that did not exist, just an air gap.

Hi guys I'm new to bad caps, I'm about to embark on this same adventure 14 blink LED with this same model TV TC-p42s30. Can you guys just sum up exactly what the bad parts were and then I'll go through the post and find how you tested those individual parts. I read the whole thread and I see there was a few things that were though to be bad but turned out OK after additional tests. But what were the actual bad parts.

I think the DG302 surface mounted transistors but i'd check all of those surface mounted components. some will be diodes. Check resistance across the SN2 connector and see if it's showing short.

There may be other threads out there on the same board repair and i think there are some kits available too

Not sure if anyone has used the Sj kit but $20 is cheap enough. It may not need all those parts but most likely the transistors.

Only thing I'm unsure about is whether the FET driver ICs survive or not.

Time to revive this old bugger.
Panasonic took another crap, and I don't want to buy another one just yet, though I'm very tempted. Had a chance to re-read this thread, and I'd forgotten what a journey this last repair was.... but I'm back again to see if I can get a few more years out of this set.

Luckily found a training manual still on my computer to get me through the first steps. Once again, narrowed it to VSUS short coming from the SC board.... My guess is that I'm experiencing the same problem once again. Going back through the notes here to figure out how to isolate the problem... hopefully can order the parts and get it up and running again.

                      Happy New Year!

Removed the 4 30F131's and the short has disappeared.... already ordered a pack of 10 for 13 bucks... might as well keep some on hand. For the life of me, I can't remember how to test these four to see if one or more is still good. Toshiba has removed their diagram showing the configuration of the pins, so I don't even know which is source and which is drain. If anyone could give me a quick reminder of how to test them, I will - otherwise, just going to install four new ones.

Perhaps they stopped manufacturing these... I wonder if there is a newer model of this transistor available that can better withstand the stresses the Panasonic puts on it? Guess I don't know enough about electronics to figure that out.

Well I'm here to join the club! Had just reactivated ANT input to mess around and see if I could find some OTA channels when I got a *pop* and the TV turned off. When I turn it back on I get a solid red light but if I press and hold the power button it gives me the 14 blinks...

I'm totally clueless re circuit boards but I just do not have the money to plop down on a new TV right now so I guess I'll be trying to fix it.

Most likely the SN board, disconnect the plug at SN2 (board on the left side) and check between the pins on the SN2 plug for a short to verify.
Here is a troubleshooting manual for this model:

Thanks for sharing this! So, I'm probably just being dumb, but it appears to me that this manual is for the ST30, not the S30? Though I assume they're pretty similar?

Of note, the manual describes exactly what appears to be happening...

Holding the power switch for over 5 seconds after the unit has gone into shut down and it’s in lock mode with the power LED solid red (Note: the LED stays on if the power button is momentarily pressed).
...and suggests that this is a P board rather than SN board issue? (To be clear: I DO NOT get 14 blinks UNLESS I press & hold the power button on the TV. I can get the LED on with a remote, but then it doesn't respond to anything)

I just find it highly coincidental that this occurred after I switched to ANT input - could I have shorted something with my coax cable?

I haven't taken the back cover off yet, but I can sort of see something interesting looking at the digital audio output:
                              1. plug in tv
                              2. click sound + see red lights in that area
                              3. ~5 secs later, what i can best describe as a louder click or pop, and the light goes dark
same thing happens if I then press the power button

Start on slide 50 in the pdf. You will be able to determine where the problem is coming from. That's about as far as i can take you, unless you happen to have the same problem I had (as poorly documented in this old thread.) There are a lot of helpful people on this forum. Once you get past the first troubleshooting you can further search the forum to see if answers are already there, and start a new thread if you can't find any answers.

Thanks, man. Will do. I'll learn up on some circuitry basics and see if I can't isolate the issue - I don't trust myself with a heat gun and soldering iron, but if I can ship my SN board off for a professional to repair for $60 I'll be more than happy. Like others, no desire to part with a plasma until OLEDs become reasonable.
