    Vertical Green Stripe Samsung LN52A580

Hey guys, I joined up here because I am interested in attempting to fix a TV. What I found on craigslist is a 52" Samsung with a large green stripe down the center:
    http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/ele/3933687652.html

Is this something that can be fixed or is this an issue with the screen itself?

I'm new to the TV repair world, but not to working with soldering, DMM, and so on.

    Thanks!

Side note, another one I was thinking about (not nearly as nice when fixed, but would be a lot smaller loss if I failed at fixing it, haha)

    Just looking for some advice.

I'm going to say there's a good chance (>50%) that you'd be looking at an unrepairable LCD panel fault.

2nd one looks to be a 42" 1080p Panasonic -- a very nice plasma when working -- and is likely a DG board issue. Get model number, if PX70/PX80 it's 720p, if PZ70/PZ80 then 1080p.

Ok, awesome, I'll avoid the first one. The second one, I'll get that model number soon. I emailed them already.

Thanks for the quick info! This forum is great.

I am just confused by the "we used computer power supply to test it but it does not come with supply." There is no way to generate the 200V and 75V that the plasma panel requires from a computer power supply.

I asked about that, they said it uses an external power supply? I didn't think computer power supplies were high voltage at all (24V max?), just high amperage. Think something could have been damaged by them attempting to use a computer power supply?

I wonder if he just bought the TV without a power supply and it never worked for him because he was attempting to power it up with a computer power supply.

Computer power supplies use 12V maximum. Some parts of the electronics in Panasonic sets require 15V in addition to the Vsus=200V and Vda=75V. Perhaps by supply, they mean "cable"? I've had this confusion before...

Yep, this is the same thought I had last night as well. I don't think TVs often use external power supplies, if ever.

Some smaller LCD ones, and some larger LED ones, but no plasma I'm aware of has ever used an external power brick.

I wonder if the seller means power cord, not power supply. I'm still skeptical. The ad makes it seem like they've owned it since 2007 but then makes it seem like they had to use a scavenged part (power supply or power cord) to test it. It also looks like this set has been opened up and messed with already. I would stay away from it.

Yes, I would agree with you Johnboy. Hard to say for sure though. Probably not worth the risk. Model number is:
                    42PE77U

Doesn't seem like a TV really worth the time maybe? Only 720p.

                        Thoughts on an HP-R4252?

                        http://flint.craigslist.org/ele/3849645481.html

"Tv has a beautiful clear picture. There are no scratches anywhere and the screen is fully entact. After a while the picture goes out and the screen goes black but this only lasts seconds at most. We will be replacing it as soon as our order for a new tv comes in. It is very heavy (90 lbs.?) and two strong persons are needed to move it. If interest respond with your local phone number. We will then call you."

                        Thanks for the advice!

Easy fix - cold solder joint on PSU. $50 is a bargain.

Oh, wow, that is quite simple. Awesome, I might go for that one.

Sorry to keep bumping this thread, but I spotted another one a bit closer to me.

Similar issue? Or would the other one be a safer bet.

I'm guessing this one has a power supply issue, also. It could just be bad caps or bad solder joints.

Since it never shows a picture it may be a little more complicated.

Ok, looks like the TV model isn't quite as good either. I'll probably get the first one. I think I might use this as an excuse to get a new soldering iron too. Mine is good for soldering trailer wiring, but not small connections like this.

Is there anyway to get rid of burn in? Or is that a permanent thing?

I'm still waiting to hear back from the first guy on the other TV, which is why I haven't bought it, haha. I offered him $40, but he wasn't interested.

Most plasmas, including Panasonics, have a burn-in reduction feature. It's located somewhere in the menu. It may not totally remove the burn-in, though. So, are they saying that the "broken screen" is actually just burn-in on that particular TV?

The TV for which you offered $40 is the 52" Samsung, correct?
