    Samsung PS51E450A1WXXO screen problems

Hi people, my name is Dave, newbie, first post (be gentle) and I will appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Being totally new to the repair of any sort of tv by myself I first ask for your patience if I ask any stupid questions.

When watching the screen it looks snowy and grainy, I get pink patches and green dots on screen, very "contrasty" the problem is worse on bright backgrounds, if the picture, say, is showing an inside shot that is quite dark it looks ok. It also ghosts bright images from previous frames, if that makes any sense. The TV is only 7 months old. I have checked the ribbon connections by undoing and re attaching also I cannot see any visible signs of any damage/burns. At the moment I do not own a DMM but am willing to purchase one. Quick shots taken from around 3 feet attached.

On the pics showing the back of the plasma from 1 to 5,
    1) Main Power board
    2) Y Buffer (written on board itself)
    3) Main board
    4) ?
    5) X Y Main (written on board)

If the above are incorrect then please correct them. The number info is to help me in any future replies i.e "Check board 4 for..."

I would like to know if this is a common fault and a straight forward board replacement (1-5) or a plasma for the skip. Also I have an opportunity to purchase a damaged screen plasma, same model but a version 2, mine is V 3, does anybody know where to check to see if the boards are compatible between the two models?

Thanks for reading and I appreciate any help I may receive,
    Cheers,
    Dave.

Blimey, is this a 2012 plasma? Samsung quality never disappoints...
Anyway, your fault looks a bit like an X-main problem.

You've mixed up your boards, it's
1: power supply / main power board
    2: X-main
3: main board / AV board
    4: control board / T-con
    5: Y-main

Can you get a picture of the Samsung part sticker on the back of the plasma panel, with the Vs/Va/Vsc etc voltage readings on it.

You will need a DMM to do the tests required.

          Hi Tom,
thanks for the fast reply and here's the pic you requested. As I say, no DMM at the moment but willing to get one,
          Dave.

Sorry for duplicate but is this meter any good?

Just out of curiosity but what kind of warranty do you get over there on these things? That set would most certainly be under warranty here in the states.

Fluke 11 is an excellent meter. I have a Fluke 12.

                Hi again,
I changed the x-main board as it was cheap, no change, meter readings are as follows
VS 201 and is 200, VA 58 and is 57.9 and VSC -180 is 179.9 so damn close I think. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,
                cheers,
                Dave

Can you see a test point for Ve?

VE shows 78.3 taken off Y Main board,

Sounds a little low; could cause your issue. Usually Ve is at least 90V on Samsung plasmas.

Ve is usually produced by the Y-main, but used by the X-main.

Do you see an adjustment point for it?

If not, try increasing -Vsc (make it more negative), which should also make Ve increase. Don't exceed -195V on -Vsc.

There's no adjustment that I can see on the Y-main so I adjusted-Vsc to -194 which put the Ve up to 84.4, checked the picture and it still looks poor.

I would consider swap of Y-main if it is not too expensive. You may have bad cap on the Ve leg of the transformer generating Vsc and Ve, you may want to consider replacing that.

Hi Tom, will begin looking for a replacement Y-main now. I have also uploaded a pic of the board, would it be possible to mark which caps may be dodgy and if poss. supply a link on how to test them. Once again thanks for all your help and once the Y-main arrives I will post on here the outcome,
                            cheers Dave.

                              These would all be suspect.

                                  Re: Samsung PS51E450A1WXXO screen problems

Apologies first of all for horrible delay from my last post. Due to various s@@t going on the Samsung was the least of my worries and therefore ignored. However, when browsing the bay of fleas last week I managed to find a y main/sus board for £9.00 and thought it better than trying to source caps e.t.c.
Old one out, new one in and success. So a big thanks to the Badcaps community (especially Tom) for the patience shown to a noob. Would have gone to a specialist for no doubt a quite expensive repair, with this forums help, a grand total of £19.00
                                  cheers guys,
