    Vizio P42 No screen

    I recently was given a Vizio P42HDTV10A from a friend, because it doesn't provide video any more. According to him, there was a loud pop, and then the screen went blank. From the research I've done, it would seem that either the Ysus board or the Zsus board (or both) are not working; it also seems to be a fairly common problem with this TV. The cost of replacing either board is considerably more than I would like to spend repairing the TV. I have to imagine though, that the entire board wouldn't have to be replaced. If it's simply a part on the board that I could remove, and solder a new one on, that would greatly preferred. So my questions are these:
    1. What exactly goes wrong with the Ysus/Zsus board when it malfunctions? Which parts are affected?
    2. Has anyone replaced whichever parts are needed to make the board work again? If so, please provide as much detail pertaining to the situation as possible.

    (I have soldering experience, so removing and replacing parts is not an issue. The issue is knowing which parts are in need of replacing.)

          1st check the fuses on both the Ysus and X or Zsus boards (the big boards on the left and right side of the TV as you are looking at the back of the TV). Power off (unplugged), wait for at least 5 minutes to discharge all the capacitors. I would expect the IPM modules on either board (more likely the Ysus) shorted causing fuse or fuses to blow. The IPM's are under the big heat sinks on either board. The "pop" sound is usually one of the modules going to the big electronics graveyard.

            Okay, I checked all the fuses. There was one blown fuse on the Zsus board.

              On a quick side note, I found a 54" Panasonic VT25. Would the components of that TV be able to be used to fix the Vizio?

                It also seems that I mislabeled the power as the zsus. This is the zsus.

                  Was the blown fuse on the power supply or the Zsus? If it was on the Zsus, pull the board and check the IPM for shorts.
                  There is a tutorial on which pins to check on the Coppell TV repair blog:

                  If indeed you find a short, you can replace the IPM, but it is a difficult job unless you have the right equipment.

                    The blown fuse was on the zsus. Do you think I could pull a woking IPM off of another plasma tv?

                      You could do that, though beware these IPMs have short lifespans. That IPM may only have a few months left on it. If you get one which is from a newer generation it'll probably work much better, as I think LG fixed the issue (of course, they never told their customers and/or offered free repairs.)

                          Short answer...Nope. You should see a sticker on the side of the big heat sink with the number of the IPM.

                            Just wanted to say thanks for the informative post. I've had one of these on hand for some time. Picture went out but still powers on+sound. Purportedly common but little actual instruction on how to troubleshoot+fix it. I have fuses on order now so if those don't work I'll see if this helps.

                              Replacing the fuse is not going to correct your issue; you'll just end up with another blown fuse. You need to replace the aforementioned damaged IPM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8MNQYXw8E0
