Sony KDL-40EX400, No Power, No Power Light. Struck by Lighting.

So I have a 40" Sony KDL-40EX400 that was struck by lightning this summer. The unit was on and in use when the power went out. I'm getting absolutely no power to the unit, though I'm lacking a multimeter at the moment. None of the capacitors look blown, except maybe the rather large one. It's flat on top, but not flat/concave like all of the smaller ones.

I didn't notice this before I uploaded the photos, but around the base of some of the components (resistors, maybe?) there seems to be some singed yellow areas. For all I know the entire unit is shot. I was hoping you guys could tell me what tends to blow in situations like this.

I have some previous experience replacing components, since I do have a couple of arcade machines, and I was able to get another tv up and running thanks to the advice here at the forum. Any help would be appreciated.

    The most likely suspects.

    1) The fuse may be open.
    2) The bridge rectifier may be shorted.
    3) The power mosfet may be shorted.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

The yellowing is just from heat. You'll notice the resistors are 3-5w probably so they'll tend to dissipate some heat.

It also looks like you have fuses near your output rails so check those as well on top of the main AC fuse as retiredcaps advised.

I'm still a novice when it comes to repairs, so what you're saying is a bit foreign to me. Once I find the service manual I will give that a once over. It's going to be until at least tomorrow before I can get my hands on a multimeter to check.

Thanks tom. I found a PDF of it last night, so I'm still going over everything. I must not have searched properly when I was using your site, because I was unable to find it.

I just added it when you asked for it. I had a look around the internet for it and found it on an odd website somewhere... can't remember where.

                Hello Kuroichaos,

Good afternoon! My name is Amanda Maffei here with the Sony Support team. I'm very sorry to hear that about your Television. Have you had an authorized Sony servicer evaluate it? If not, please call: Priority Service: 239-768-7547 Hours:

                ■Mon-Fri 8:00am-12:00am (Midnight) ET
                ■Sat-Sun 9:00am-8:00pm ET

They will need you to reference your event Id number (E56048714) when you call. Afterwards, they will check your current location for nearby servicers that can come to your home and evaluate your Television. Once the evaluation is complete, please have the servicer send us your evaluation papers back to Sony so we can review and determine what would be the next best step on getting this resolved. Hope this helps! Thanks! =)
