What do you guys think of this one?

This guy has a HP 42" Plazma TV

    PL4260N

    Model # CPTOH-0602

Only the left half of the screen works. When on you can see the words "no signal" scroll around the left side then dissapear moving to the right.

He has a brand new remote and powercord with it.

    According to this:

    http://www.justanswer.com/tv-repair/...lack-left.html

It may be this main logic board:

    http://www.shopjimmy.com/lg-6871qch977b-ctrl-board.htm

Which I also found on Ebay for $40:

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trks...item43b18d1f2f

What do you guys think? How much should I offer him
    for it?

    It looks fixable......

Possibly bad panel COF failure, unrepairable. It occurred to one user on this forum on an LG plasma. Would generally avoid.

      Thanks for your response, Tom.

      What does COF stand for?

You are pretty certain that website is wrong about the main logic
      board being the culprit?

Assuming you are right, and it's unrepairable, what would you
offer him just to sell the parts on Ebay?

Chip On Flex. Individual X driver ICs mounted on the plasma panel's flex itself. Unreplaceable...

No, it could still be the main board, but such a failure is rare.

        $10... but I wouldn't normally bother.

Ok, so the COF circuits typical fail with all of one side
          of the screen going blank?

What % of the screen does each X drive IC control?

I would suspect right X board or control board. Maybe even just flat cable from ctrl board to right X board.

As I understand picture is missing on whole right part of the screen. If it's COF than it should be all COF's for right part of the screen, not just one. If it's just one or two non working bars it could be a COF. I believe it's quite rare that all COF's from one side corrupt at once...

            Cheers!

Re: What do you guys think of this one?

It sounds quite rare but a control failure apparently causes all COFs on one side to fail. So it's a combined failure of control board and COF, although the control board failure may be very temporary.

Than it should be some visible burns and damage on the COF flex cables and components on it. There are some SMD resistors on COF's that actually can be replaced...

Paul678, could you remove x board on that part of the screen. It could be also needed to remove large long aluminium heatsink so you have to remove both x boards and heatsink to free all COF's. Then inspect closely all parts and lines on non working side COF's. There should be some visible damage. Use a spyglass... take some closeup pics.

                  Cheers!

Well, I have to buy it first...haha.

I asked the guy how much he wanted for it, and haven't gotten
                    a reply yet.

Yes, you touched on what I was getting at, that it would seem
unlikely for all the COFs on only one side to fail at the same time.

However, Tom may be correct that another part of the circuit
                    can actually cause this.

I suppose I will consider buying it for $10 or less, and then
see what I can find......expecting it to be only good for parts....

                    ....but maybe I'll get lucky....

Re: What do you guys think of this one?

There are resistors on the flex, but only on the older LG plasmas in my experience; the newer ones have all the resistors on the X boards, and they are per channel.

Well, if panel is bad, but all (or most) other boards OK, I call it good bargain even for 40-50$. Y-SUS, Z-SUS, ctrl board, Y buffers, main video board and PSU!! Look at the prices on ebay. Selling it board by board at 50% lower prices than ebay it's 150-200$ for all parts. If TV has picture (even half of it), most crucial boards and maybe even all are OK. I could bet all boards except ctrl and one x board are OK ;-)

                        Cheers!

Very true. I get over not being able to fix a
TV I spent $10 on, when I make $60 on the power supply
                          alone.

Then often the other boards also sell, but at the slower
rate. But it's quite good to have a big selection of
                          TV parts on Ebay......

Especially when you get the TV for $5, or very often
                          for free!
