Vizio XVT473SV white screen but warms up

    I recently bought a Vizio LCD 47" TV(model #xvt473sv) off Craigslist.
When the seller demo'ed it it was fine. But after getting home, the screen was very bright with images showing up faintly. After about 10-15mins warmup everything was good. When I shut off for 30 mins and restarted it, the vizio logo turned orange and it cycled between orange, white. The tv never turned on, so I unplugged and replugged it. This time it was fine and started up ok.

I have since got used to the warm up period but yesterday the unit didn't turn on. A local repair guy looked at it and said it was the main board. He replaced the main board but the issue was the same. He then concluded that it could be the tcon or the LCD itself. He didn't have a tcon to test it.

When I tested it again today the TV seemed fine after warm up period.

I opened the back cover and started looking at the components. Looks like most are from LG. here is the list:
    1. Inverter board: 0500-0712-0020
    2. Power board: 0500-0512-0810
    3. Main board:
    4. Tcon board: 0171-2372-0024

All the caps ate visibly ok. I will post pictures in my next message.

I am a total newbie and would like to get some pointers on how to troubleshoot and fix it. Please help!

Well, that eliminate the main board, power supply, and the inverter boards. Just two things left: the T-CON or bad panel.
We'll wait until we see the pictures of the screen shot.

A youtube video would be great to show this issue, however if just wanted to find a quick fix either between the T-con and LCD, no brainer, the least expensive.

Don't forget about the T-CON flat ribbon cable, they do go bad. I had a bad T-CON flat ribbon cable, +12 volts wasn't stable going through the flat ribbon cable and I was getting a picture sometime.

Attached are the pics. I could not get the unit to power up. It was just cycling between the Orange and White Vizio logo.
I will try and get a youtube video later this afternoon.

Is this ribbon from the mainboard to the tcon?
Also across what pins should I check for the 12v?
I see that the ribbon is connected inverted to the mainboard. Is that normal?
I also see a flashing blue LED on the inverter board. Is that normal too?

yes the ribbon from the main board to the T-CON board

not sure about the blue LED on the inverter board, let take it one thing at a time

On the T-CON BOARD there is a white SMD fuse near the ribbon connector, you can check your +12 volts from there. another thing is this model Vizio have a boot up process this is why the Vizio POWER LED is flashes. You must wait about 30 sec. each time you unplug the TV.

I had something similar happen when a flex cable wasn't seated properly from the T-Con board to the panel. Check that out maybe.

What are those brown stains on the two IC by the top right of the T-CON board.

Right on target. I got a replacement tcon board and replaced it. Voila itvworks now.
When I examined the bad tcon board, I saw the brown stains around the 2 ICs. Looks like they were the blown out but didn't check voltages.

Thanks everyone for your help on this. I really appreciate this. It gives me confidence that I can atleast troubleshoot TVs in future.

Glad to hear you got it working, those ICs may have blown up (got hot and turn the board brown) due to failed swithing voltage regulators close by.

Can I ask where you purchased your main board from? I believe mine is bad and looking to replace it. While I have never repaired a tv before I do build computers so I think I can handle it. My tv will come on just fine, but will auto shut off after roughly 10 seconds. Once it is off the vizio on the tv flashes on and off and eventually comes back on by itself, but then auto shuts off again. Does this sound like a mainboard?
