    Vizio VO47lfhdtv30a Scrolling/Flickering Screen

Okay, so a friend of mine was given this Vizio LCD TV for free. I've fixed a few TVs here and there, so I told him I would give it a try as he didn't have the money that the local repair shops were asking for to get it running again. This was clearly a mistake on my part

So here's the situation: The TV has a very bright picture. It turns off and on just fine. The problem arises when it has been on for an hour or more. The picture will begin to scroll or scramble (this was difficult to capture on film so I'll just try to describe it as best I can). Basically, the picture 'jumps' up and down, and you can see the red/green/blue haze. If you unplug it for around 10 minutes, the problem will dissipate until another hour or so passes. Sometimes, the TV can be on for several hours before it happens. Other times, it will happen in less than 45 minutes. It seems to get particularly aggravated with rapid movement (though that might just be a coincidence).

I did a little research, and from what I could gather the problem was with the main board. I found a relatively inexpensive board on Ebay, so I went ahead and ordered it. I received it today, installed it, and when I fired the TV up, the picture is actually WORSE. Now, even the blue standby screen is scrambled, which was not happening before, even when tuned in stations would scramble. Large yellow flickering blocks appear, and lots of lines going every which way. And this happens immediately, not after any waiting period.

I thought that perhaps this might mean a bad LVDS cable, but when I reconnected the old board, everything cleared up and went back to normal. That tends to convince me that we're not talking about a bad cable (at least not that particular one).

So, my questions are as follows:

1)Do you think this means the replacement board is also bad? I have a warranty from the seller on Ebay, so he'll replace it if that's the case.

2)I know Vizio tends to have patchwork innards in their TVs (this new part has a slightly different serial # but is listed as appropriate for this set). Is it possible there's some sort of voltage issue with the new board?

3)Should I jump off a cliff now, or later?

PS - I have searched high and low for a service manual for this particular model and have come up empty.

Yeah, I think the replacement board is bad. The boards are often pulls from TVs with smashed screens, so it's not always possible to check the boards are okay.

I would look at replacing the T-con, which controls the LCD panel. Are the menus/volume interface affected by this?

Tom, the menus/volume don't appear affected. I can still pull up the menu, though the screen gets worse when I do, almost totally blacking out. But I can still see that it's popping up.

The T-con was going to be my next question. I see they aren't terribly high on the resale market, so at least I won't be in too deep if that's the issue.

        Re: Vizio VO47lfhdtv30a Scrolling/Flickering Screen

Oh boy, well as if this situation could not get any worse, now that I've put the old board back in I'm hearing a buzzing sound from the power supply. I really don't remember hearing this before, and now the skipping/dancing/scrambling seems to be affecting the blue screen as well, which it did not appear to be doing before. I'm also seeing some white lines in the left hand side of the screen, about an inch and a half to two inches wide, all the way from the bottom to the top, as if there's some kind of interference happening.

        *EDIT*

Okay, I took the back off and loosened a few screws, and now the white lines have disappeared. I'm thinking maybe I had a screw in a little too tight or that I might not have had the grounding wire in the right position. The buzzing from the power supply is still happening, but perhaps I just didn't notice it as much with the case on.

Did you use the part number on the bar code sticker when you ordered the board? The number printed on the board can be used in several sets.

If menus are okay, the T-con isn't at fault. The T-con is unable to differentiate between menus and video.

PlainBill had this problem with a particular TV and it was caused by a dodgy voltage regulator (not stable output, oscillating at some kHz), so check all the regulators on the board. Ask if you need help.

The boards are identical except for the last two digits:
              My board # 3647-0152-0150 (2F)
              Replacement board # 3647-0152-0150 (2H)

The general part # is 0171-2272-2782

The serial numbers match, and per the product page the 2H board is a valid replacement in this set for the 2F board. The boards themselves are identical, same fit, same capacitors, etc.

Sorry Tom, I think I misunderstood what you were originally asking. The menus are definitely affected by the skittering/jumping on screen. They can still be pulled up, but they're nearly impossible to see because of the scrambling effect. But if you're just on an empty input that isn't connecting to anything, the blue 'No Input' screen does not skitter and jump.

Oh okay. In which case, the T-con could possibly cause the problem. If it's cheap, it may be worth trying.

Yeah, I found one for $30 on Ebay that's supposedly been tested (we'll see about that). I don't mind such a small investment. In terms of the replacement board I purchased, I'm definitely returning that and assuming its got issues of its own, since it failed immediately.

UPDATE: I ordered a new t-con and received it yesterday. The TV is now working great. I've had it on for over 6 hours, and it shows no signs of the scrolling problem. I did take note when I removed the old t-con board, I compared it to the new board and it looked as if the solder underneath one of the smaller chips was completely gone. I suspect this is where things went haywire.

At any rate, wanted to thank you for the good advice, Tom.

Well, so much for that. My friend called me today and said the TV was acting up again. I went over, and now it has lines that pop up from time to time. I feel like I just can't win with this thing. I would assume the new T-con is having a problem, but this is completely different from the original problem. It more closely resembles (based on what I've seen) a failing LCD screen, which I'm really hoping isn't the case as that's obviously going to be bad news for my friend.

Did you install the heat-pad on the T-con IC, which fits on the shield? The IC could be damaged by heat without the heatsink. It doesn't sound like a bad panel because it lasted a month with a new T-con. It could also be a loose LVDS connector, check really carefully.

When you say the heat-pad, do you mean the velvet-y tape that fits around the metal shield? Basically, I put everything back exactly as it was before the failure. It actually only lasted about 10 days, the replacement was on the 13th and my friend said this started a few days before he called me (apparently he hoped it would just go away).

In terms of the LVDS cable, is there any way that the previous failed board could damage that? It seems strange that it might fail such a short time after the replacement.

The heat pad is a grey or beige piece of flexible rubber that sits between the T-con IC and the shield. I don't see a way the LVDS cable could be damaged by the T-con, but it's possible when replacing the T-con you seated it properly, and it has worked itself loose in time.

Ahh, well that might explain my problem, there was no such part. The T-con just sat straight on the frame with the heat shield over it. Here are pics of the setup.

Also: I notice that on the bottom of the T-con it looks like some solder has possibly melted. There were 5 silver bubbles on the bottom when I installed it, and now I notice one is gone. I've included a photo of that as well.

So I brought this baby back to my house, and it was not repeating the behavior. I left it on for 6 hours, nothing. Then tonight, it starts up again. Oi. I have a video of what it's doing, hopefully it will show up. I'm thinking this T-con has gone bad or was perhaps bad to start with, but if this is an overheating issue (since there is no pad that sat between the T-con and the shield), I wonder if this will just continue happening.

I should note that the same trick about unplugging it for about 10 minutes works with this (as it did with the previous problem).

The middle of the metal shield, it has the indentation that looks like it should make contact with the processing IC through the heatsink pad.

Yeah, the indentation sits flat on top of that area of the T-con board. I've included a pic of the T-con in place just so it's totally clear.

I've also rechecked the cables, and nothing seems loose or disconnected.

I'm currently trying to diagnose and fix my Vizio TV (Model M50-C1). I've tried a number of different basic solutions, but I'm trying to determine if my issue is currently a failing panel, T-Con board, or main board (or something else entirely) and whether or not it is worth my time to fix it. Details of the issue and what I've tried are below as well as why I think it is either a bad panel, T-Con board, or main board.

The Issue: The TV will be on and working fine but after the TV is on for ~5-10 minutes the screen will freeze (with sound continuing) until the TV reboots itself. While...

                                          Hello everyone,

We recently replaced the OLED screen on a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Gen 10. After about a month, the replacement screen began to flicker. Initially, updating the Intelยฎ Irisยฎ Xe graphics driver resolved the issue for about a week. However, when the problem recurred, updating the driver again had no effect.

The flickering only occurs once the system reaches the Windows login screen. Interestingly, if we disable the Intel GPU driver or connect the laptop to an external monitor, the flickering stops. We have tried installing two different replacement screens,...

Hello everybody! Posting this in hopes somebody has some expertise that leads to a clear path of troubleshooting that saves me a lot of time!

My macbook has the flex cable problem, the one that prevents the screen turning on. Ive been dealing with this for the last 3 years. Last year it went dead and I managed to fix it following youtube tutorials. But my fix wasnt the best, the problem returned a month later. This week, it went dead again. I again tried to fix it.

This time the original cable broke too close to the screen, it can't be fixed without tearing the screen...

This device came in due to the screen flickering if you use the touchpad or external mouse. It will flicker black when this occurs. If you use the touchscreen, the behavior does not appear. Also, if connected to external monitor, the external monitor is not affected by the flickering. I did a good amount of research on this, and concluded that it is due to the display driver. HP does not offer Windows 11 drivers for this model so I got the replacement drivers direct from Intel. I installed them and the problem...

                                          Hi,

I have a iphone XS that came in for a screen replacement, the screen was badly cracked, and inside missing scues, on the back of the screen still the blue protector, the screen was a LCD. So we replaced the screen and all good, installed the screen and we noticed that pressing the screen with a bit of force but not excessive, the phone dies. After plugging the charger it turns back on, but again if you press it it dies. I open the phone again, and I can't see anything major, with the phone open, if I press on the logic board, battery, charging board, or even putting pressure on...
