    This Guy wants $50 for a LG 42pc3d (No picture, Sound ok)

    This is the same problem everyone is having
    with this set.

    Possibly Z and/or Y sustain. These are about $100
    or so on Ebay. Maybe buffers too.

    There is also a repair kit:

    Don't know how successful this kit has been.

    This one sounds like it might get expensive to try and fix it.....

    It is a Y-sustain issue, almost certainly. You can replace the hybrid module which will only cost $40 or so, or Coppell TV will rebuild a Y-sus for you. But tell him it is expensive to repair; I'd offer around $25-30.

      Ok, so the repair kit I gave a link to includes one Sanyo Module and one fuse T4.0A/250V. And it's about $45 if you include the shipping.

      This is the hybrid module you are talking about, right?

      The repair "instructions" say: Check and locate the open fuse on YSUS board or ZSUS board. Replace the open fuse and the 32 pin Hybrid Module on that board. Does this imply that you may have to buy two kits, and replace
      two modules, on both the Ysus and Zsus?

      Have you repaired this very same model yourself?

        No. A failed Z-sustain causes a dim picture, but there is still a picture. A failed Y-sustain causes no picture at all. It's unlikely both are failed, and the failed fuse is the clue to which board has failed.

        Please note that replacing the IPM is very difficult. I *highly* recommend you forward your board to Coppell TV repair or a similar company. PlainBill knows how difficult it is, ask him.

        No, I have not replaced the hybrid on a 42PC3D, but I have dealt with other faults on a 42PC1D and 42PX5D so I have a general idea of the layout of these TVs.

          The IPM is the unit under the big heatsink, right? Is it difficult
          to replace because it has to be heatsinked on both sides, top and
          bottom?

          If it's a good chance the total repair will be only $85 (adding $10
          to ship the board to Coppell), then I'd say it would be
          worth getting this tv......

            The repair is difficult because removing a 32-pin IC from a 2/4 layer PCB is not an easy task. The board was never designed to have the module replaced; official LG literature states the Y-sustain board itself should be replaced.

              I looked at my scrap Ysus from the Magnavox, and
              it doesn't look impossible to remove the IPM...

                Give it a go on the Magnavox scrap. If you can't remove it, then send the board for repair.

                    I have had dealings with Coppell and wouldn't recommend them at all (not getting into it on here). There's a company in Canada who also sell these modules, perhaps they would fit them also - I don't know.

                      There are several methods for pulling the hybrid (IPM).

                      1. With a good soldering iron heat up each pin and add Chip-Quik to reduce the melting point. Rig a 'handle' so you can pull the hybrid. Then use a hot air gun to heat up all pins and pull the hybrid.

                      2. Cut a groove the length of a pair of 3/4" dia x 2.5" long copper rods. Attach them to a framework so they match the rows of pins, with the grooves facing up. Heat them with a propane torch and fill the grooves with solder. Set the board on top so the IPM pins drop into the grooves, wait a few seconds and lift the ipm and heat sink.

                      3. Use a small screwdriver to break the tabs on the IPM so you can remove the heat sink. Now cut the pins and extract them one at a time.

                      4. Someone mentioned using a hacksaw to cut all the legs on the ipm.

                        The method I've learned, when needing to remove a
                        defective multi-lead chip, where it's impractical to heat up
                        all the leads at one time, is to cut through all of the leads
                        with a pair of wirecutters (hacksaw??!!!), remove the IC package,
                        then use a soldering iron and needle-nose pliers
                        to remove the cut-off leads still in the board.

                        This looks like it should work with the IPM.

                          That's a good method. Unfortunately the only way you can get to the leads of the IPM without removing the heat sink would be with a hacksaw blade. It's interesting, Samsung uses much the same design on the LJ92-01200A Y-sustain. The one significant difference is there are holes in the circuit board so you can easily remove the screws holding the heat sink to the IPM.

                            Wait, I always thought the heatsink screws went through to the PCB? Having never removed an LG Y-sustain, I would automatically think this. Are they just bolted to the IPM? The only thing holding that heavy heatsink and IPM on is the solder connections?

                              Yes, the scrap Ysus I have is a Samsung LJ92-01200A, and it's simple
                              to remove the heatsink by undoing 2 screws.

                              But if you are saying the LG Ysus heatsink cannot be removed as
                              easily, then that would certainly make things more difficult.

                              I haven't heard from the guy, so I don't want to plan too far
                              ahead, but Coppell is certainly an option.....

                                Yes ,it is the correct IPM module.What is the Y-sus boars number?And by the way ,you can buy the IPM module much cheaper.
                                Like I said ,in another post.On one tv set ,I had to replace both hybrids ,on the Y-sus and Z-sus.

                                There is not enough room ,to cut the pins.You need to de-solder ,with a very powerful iron.Just for this ,I bought a 100W soldering iron.
                                Put some pressure on the hybrid ,with a flat screw driver ,and then heat up ,on one side ,
                                half way.

                                Then go on to the opposite side.Next you take the part ,that is untouched ,etc.
                                Take care ,where you put ,the scew driver ,because there are transistors and other parts ,underneath the hybrid (sometimes).

                                Startboy has these hybrids ,for 23,74 US $ ,at the moment.On ebay ,price is without postage.
