    LG 50PG3000-ZA help needed please.

    Hi all,

Firstly thank you for providing such a huge site of knowledge!

I have been looking round the internet for some time today looking for information on my problem and most of the searches i came across lead me here.

So anyway here is my problem..... (common problem from what I've read)

Yes you guessed it... No picture but I have sound.

It is just out of warranty but LG agreed to fix it if the problem was under £250. An engineer called today to tell me I needed a new Y-SUS board and 2 Scan Modules (he must be good as he didn't even take the back of the unit off!), he then went on to say that he would be unable to repair it as it would cost £380.

I have had a look round the site and I'm now here.....

    1. I have taken off the back cover and located all the boards
    2. Power up shows green power light on both front panel and rear control board.
    3. Fuse ok on PCB and heat syncs are all warm after 30 mins.
    4. Fuse ok on ZSUS and heat syncs are all warm after 30 mins.
    5. Fuse ok on YSUS but heat syncs are cold after 30 mins.
    6. The fuses I have checked are the obvious ones that look like glass fuses.
    7. No bulging caps etc (well that I can see anyway)
    8. The outputs of the Va & Vs are as follows... Va: 58.3v Vs:184.8v

Now that's where I'm up to.

Oh forgot to mention that the TV man offered me £20 to take the TV away if I didn't want it repairing, I said no obviously

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

The TV tech is probably right, though the buffers may be okay.

Try disconnecting just one of the buffers and seeing if the picture comes back on half the screen.

Thanks for the quick response Tom

Quickie tho.. Do I need to disconnect the whole board or just the ribbon?

also what about the small cable that connects the two together?

        UPDATE:

Ok I removed the top buffer and and still no picture, replaced top buffer and removed bottom buffer and now I have half a picture?

Although top half of picture has a few black lines through it.

If removing the bottom buffer fixes it, then the bottom is failed, and that is all you should need to replace. Buffer boards are usually pretty cheap used on eBay or TV repair websites.

The lines are likely caused by a loose connection between the buffer and plasma panel (which you may have made while removing a board.)

It is only usually necessary to disconnect it from the sustain board. The electrodes in a plasma panel are isolated from each other and only come into play when power is applied. Disconnecting the ribbons is a pain, because you can often mis-seat them when reconnecting causing lines on the screen.

The small cable is a sync cable and should ideally be disconnected as it may carry power between the boards.

I've written some guides on this:

So all in all I don't need to replace the YSUS just yet just the bottom buffer?

            Sorry to be a pain.

Yes, as that's the board that when removed restores the picture. It is shorted, which means it is stopping the Y-sus board from working. (On older plasmas the failure of a buffer used to kill the Y-sus board too, necessitating a repair of that, but newer ones are better.)

What is the part # on that board?

Lowest price I can find on eBay is ~£55 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRAND-NEW-...item2a191a1637), which is a rip off, but at least it's cheaper than £380.

If the part # is the same and it looks identical, probably compatible.

But since the part # doesn't match, I wouldn't risk it.

I agree but if you think about it, he's probably playing from the same song sheet as LG, so will actually replace all three boards which might cost him £200 total. But it's still a big margin for him.

Managed to order the part for £42.59 inc VAT, downside 7-10 days delivery.

Will let you know how it goes. Thanks again Tom.

Your English is fine -- better than my German!

Since you have a lit up screen with messed up picture on bottom half, your top buffer board is likely bad.

Y-sustain, Z-sustain, control board, power supply, main board and bottom buffer are likely OK.

Assuming that is the top buffer (and not the bottom one), that is all you should need.
