    Samsung 223BW monitor

    Hi guys,

    My 3 years old 22' Samsung gives me some trouble, for the last 2 months at least it had some trouble to display an image when the PC starts. I had to push the button on/off from twice to at least 10 times, with the screen flickering and turning black.

    I suspected some capacitor problem so i opened the beast and took a few pictures of hte power board

    First pic is a general view of the board, there is some white stuff from cap on left and right side of the board

    2nd pic : a closer look at the left side caps

    3rd and 4th pics are 2 view of the caps on the right

    and the last pic is the cap at teh back of the board

    Im not sure if the white stuff around the caps is normal or if they just exploded

    Any help would be appreciated

    The symptoms you describe match bad capacitors.

    The black gunk and slightly bulged vents is a blantant sign of bad capacitors; CapXon capacitors are widely known as CrapXon around here and are well known to fail. These should be replaced. It would also be advisable to replace the other capacitors at the same time, as you don't want to open your monitor in a few months to replace the rest. You should use low-ESR capacitors, like Panasonic FC, FM or FR.

      Capacitors (C designation on the PCB board) die from age, heat, and shoddy build quality. Capacitors DO NOT have to be visibly bloated in order to bad. They can be out of tolerance uF (a 1000uF measures 20uF) and/or have high ESR (ohm). A multimeter will be insufficient to test for ESR. For that you need an ESR tester which costs between $50 and $300.

      Most members here will recommend that you replace ALL capacitors with reputable brands from reputable sellers. Brands like Rubycon, Panasonic, Nichicon and United Chemicon are suggested. A list of recommended caps can be found at

      The one exception might be the largest capacitor on the power board which rarely, but not never, fails.

        PS. That white stuff is glue from the factory manufacturing process designed to hold the component in place while it is being soldered or assembled. Over time with age and heat, it can turn brown and become conductive.

        For now, the white glue is okay.
