    Toshiba 32WL66P - odd backlight

    Had this TV for several years now and it's served us well. No built-in DTV tuner, but we have cable so that doesn't matter.

    Anyway, I recently noticed an odd effect on the backlight, like there's a second rectangle of darkness inside the main TV border. It's most noticeable on a plain gray or color screen, less noticeable on normal pictures (but still definitely present). Picture is still good quality as ever, just this backlight issue can get annoying.

    I've attached a photo, what do you guys think of this problem? Any idea what caused it? Is there anything I can do to fix it, or is it time to go to the great TV shop in the sky?

    The polarizers moved inside the LCD. It's something that just happens. Short of a new panel, it can't be fixed.

      In most sets you can dissemble the panel and re-align the diffuser. It's a long job and you must be extremely careful not to break the very thin lcd panel in the front.

        Plus you have to avoid getting a ton of dust inside the panel, it can be only done in a clean room. I have successfully taken apart and cleaned a 19" LCD in my bathroom, by turning hot water on for 10 minutes before i took the LCD in, humidity took care of most of the dust, but i was quick to wipe it clean and put it back together.

        I wouldn't do it on a larger panel, you simply can't be fast enough and dust will get in.

          I have done many, many panel lamp changes. Sometimes they work and sometimes not. What have you got to lose?

            A CCFL swap is totally different and doesn't require disassembly of the panel in most cases. Plus, it won't cure the OP's problem.

              My parents think it's not worth replacing the panel yet; they barely notice it. It's more apparent on certain colors and worst on the extreme right, but it doesn't ruin the picture. If it gets any worse though, we'll probably replace it rather than attempting a repair.

              If it was my main gaming TV rather than the main living room one though, I'd want a replacement I'm very picky like that.
