LG 50PC3D-UD Power Issue Bad Repair Job.

    Hi Everyone,

New to these forums, but not new to forums

A co-worker of mine was complaining a few months ago that there was a horizontal line at the bottom of her LG Plasma TV. So I recommended she should call repair or call in a tech to have a look. Well things went for the worse, the tv stopped powering up.

She called LG and pretty much was told she is SOL. The tv is 2 years old and she paid $3000 (Canadian) and that was the discounted price.

So she called a local repair shop and the guy replaced 10 bulging capacitors, and the end result was, the screen flashing sort of like static snow, and clicking off.

She told me all this and asked if I wanted the tv to play with. So I naturally said yes... I cant resist a challenge like this.

So I inspected the replaced capacitors and the values on them, they were all in the correct polarity (I guess they would have blown otherwise), but there a couple of things I didnt like about the replacements. I will explain shortly.

    He replaced the following.

    Original
    9 x 10v 3300uF 105c
    1 x 50v 680uF 105c

    Replaced with
    8 x 16v 3300uF 105c
    1 x 25v 3300uF 105c
    1 x 50v 1000uF 105c

All replacement capacitors were quite larger and cramped into the tight spots, especially the 25v 3300uF.

I know you can getaway with larger voltage, but I've always been told not to mess with the uF value as it can change the way the circuit board operates.

So I went to a local electronics store and picked up a new set of the replaced caps, and also picked up a few of the other 100uF and 300uF Caps the were not bulging but not replaced.

So now, the screen no longer flashes, but I get the following light flashing code.

Red Light, 3 x Green Light Flash, Red Light.

I can hear the switching transformer clicking.

I've repaired my wifes ViewSonic monitor this way, by simply replacing the bad caps, but this one is a bit more trickier.

Ummm what else... oh .. on the opposite side of the board are some surface mount resistors and fuses the kind that are green with 00000 written on them. I tested those and they are not blown.

Would love to get this TV up and running.

I did search the forums and there is a another thread about a similar LG but I didnt want to hijack that thread.

Oh and I also tried to download the 16077007-LG-50PC1DRTroubleshootingManual-2007-VG-Training.pdf linked in the other thread but site said the download had expired.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

This statement always raises a red flag. You are correct, the general rule of thumb is to keep the same capacitance. Going up in voltage is usually unnecessary. However, there is one other parameter that is often ignored - ESR rating. What brand and series caps did you use?

      Hi Bill,

Thanks for your response, I'm not sure about ESR Rating, I just have a regular digital multimeter. The caps the tech put in and the ones I did have the same Capacitance Tolerance.

The only one I'm not sure about is the 50v 680uF it is large and does not have the scores ontop of it.
It has markings ESA, 035TK and S4

      The original ones:
      Sanyo WB (U2A)

      The tech replaced ones:
      KZE (Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors)
      Link:

      The ones I put in:
      CD288H (Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors)

Your replacements had 4x the impedance of the United Chemi-Con, not the way you want to go. I'm not sure the ratings of the Sanyo WB originals.

So what do you recommend I do? Is there a brand type you recommend? I dont mind re-doing them.

That poses a quandry. Briefly, while I have enjoyed 100% success repairing plasma TVs, it is a very small sample, and I was able to 'cherry pick' my candidates. I have never encountered a horizontal line problem, but I would think it was a Y buffer or panel issue, not a power supply failure. I wasn't able to locate a datasheet for the Sanyo WB caps, but understand Sanyo caps have a very good reputation. The net result is that I believe replacing the caps will not solve all the issues. If you wish to go ahead with that understanding, here are my suggestions:

I prefer Panasonic FR, FM, and FC caps. My preferred supplier is Digi-Key, in part due to their USPS First Class Mail shipping option which will get the parts in your hands in two days for $2 - $3 for shipping. There are other brands of caps with equally good performance and Mouser is another good supplier, and is cheaper for large quantity orders.

BEFORE you order caps, check the cost and availability of Y-buffers for the TV. If you are prepared to pay that price, go ahead and order the caps. Only order the buffers after you establish they are necessary.

This procedure will step you through the process of selecting suitable caps from Digi-Key. If you wish, post the results and someone will verify your choices. Double check dimensions. From experience, it is embarrassing when the cap you selected fixes the problem, but you can't get the cover on.

On another thread on these forums someone linked to 16077007-LG-50PC1DRTroubleshootingManual-2007-VG-Training.pdf but the download link is now dead. Would anyone else have a copy? I'd love to go through it for for trouble shooting.

I'm going to check the transistors on the power board as well and see if there is a blown transistor.

If you Google that file you will find it is available on Scribd. By all means, download it. It is well worth having. Heck, ANY plasma troubleshooting manual is well worth having. Both the Troubleshooting and Service manuals are available on Elektrotanya.

ASUS M5A99FX Po Motherboard DIMM Issue , DIMM led keeps flashing after defective DIMM replaced.
                  by bart64
After my ASUS motherboard had random freezes and lockups, i found out that a defective dimm caused the issue, but after change the red indication led on the board keeps flashin with new dimm memory . Reset of the pushbuttion or reset of the cmos does nothing. After the damage one FET near the dimm gets very hot and also some smoke appeared of probably small smd resistors or ic probably. After replacement the FET still takes to much power and burns. When the regulator/ power ic close to the dimms UP1642P is removed the fet keeps cool so I decided to order this and replace it with a new one. But...

I had a lg 55lb6000 in for no backlight issue.Well i replaced them all as usual and took extra care with panel. When i reassembled all look well until i hooked up the hdmi source, there was slow motion blur on laft side about 1/4 of screen.I initially suspected t-con and had one so that wasn't it.I replaced main board also as i had one,no go.I ended up ripping those 4 tabs of panel and full brightness and screen returned to normal.Anyone else have experience like this?

LG 42LB5D, 42LB5DF-UL, 2008-01, Power On Issue, Replaced PS Caps
                  by bcstedt
LG 42LB5D (42LB5DF-UL) from 2008-01, unit is in good shape and no obvious heat damage or cracked solder on the boards.

                  Problem:
On first power-up the power LED flashes green about 18x and then stays solid. No backlight or image is present. Click power button, wait 10s for a click and the LED turns red. Wait 1-2s and hit power again and maybe it'll power up fully after 6 green flashes. If it doesn't light up on the sixth flash then the cycle repeats.

It seems that if the mainboard power is left on for a few minutes (solid green power, no backlight, no image)...
