    slightly ot: samsung 50" dlp

Hey. SOme friends of mine are giving me a samsung dlp tv. They say when powered on it makes a loud buzzing sound.

I suspect a bad color wheel, is that a common issue on these? Is it worth the investment?

I will post model number and more info asap.

    thanks fellas

    EDIT: model hl5063w

they say it makes noise but works, the noise gets slower after a few mins and then the tv shuts down.

going to pull it apart and take a look. THey are smokers so this thing is full of dust and dirt. Mabye i can take it apart and carefully lube the color wheel?

    Possiblities:

    Color wheel

    One of cooling fan

And no, replace only and are unique parts to work together with chassis properly.

Do not look DIRECTLY at the lamp, STRONG UV.

    Cheers, Wizard

looks like its adjustable? ( screws with springs on them)

should i carefully try to adjust?????

It would be a good idea to take a look at the service manual first. The color wheel motor bearings are known to go bad. This is NOT a 'tweak a screw until it gets quiet' thing.

i know but worth a shot lol.

Heres what i did and so far its alive. I found when it did shut down, the lamp light would flash.. HMM... pretty oddd bieng its got a new lamp already in it. A quick look around spotted it. This came from a smokers home, and they also have 8 cats.

The cooling fan for the lamp was PACKED/coated with dust dirt etc. It was spinning, but spinning pretty slowly.(color wheel fan also nasty)

I took the whole "engine"( is that the proper term for the lamp-color wheel-projector lens etc?) out and cleaned all the krap out of it. It was nasty dirty inside.

I put it back togther. The color wheel does still have a small noise( i dont care to be honest) but better yet its been up and running several hours now with no problems.

I think it was shutting down due to the lamp running too hot.

I will buy a color wheel and keep it here as i do understand eventually that it will need to be replaced. but so far so good.

Good job. I think your diagnosis was correct. Cat hair + smoke residue = a nasty mess.

The manual is in .pdf format. I've installed Adobe Reader on my system and have had no problems downloading.

I personally use foxit. I dumped the bloated Adobe back starting with version 8.x.

I'll keep that in mind. Adobe has been showing signs of going the same way as Symantec.

Foxit rocks! Way slimmer/faster than Adobe.

even slimmer alternative (which i've been using for quite a while) is "Sumatra PDF".
