    awwwwww yeah

You guys know I love a good Trinitron, right? Well I just hit the mother load. Check it out:

A Sony Trinitron 34XBR960, free off Craigslist. This bitch is HEAVY! I had to get my friend to drive me out to pick it up in his truck because there was no way this bad girl was fitting in my Civic. The reason she was free is that she only turns out about half the time. The other half, she just sits there and spits out 7 blinks on the power LED.

This is a well-documented problem, and it is fixed by replacing two IC's in the power supply. All I need to do is replace them, maybe heatsink them to make sure this doesn't happen again, and button her back up.

The 960 is supposed to be the best HD Trinitron Sony ever made. She has a bangin' 1080i picture, I used to really want one when they still sold at Circuit City a few years ago, when I was ~14 years old. Now I have it for free!

Funny story, the only reason I started looking for a big ol' CRT on Craigslist was because the girl that I am seeing right now is looking at getting her own place, and she mentioned to me that she needs a TV. "So that you can come over and we can watch movies together". I asked her if an old CRT was ok and she said she didn't mind. I'm sure I don't need to explain to you guys why this prompted me to start looking for a TV for her on the double. Then I found this lovely Trinitron for free. I think I'm keeping this one for myself - now I have to find another one for Claire!

    score!

agreed on the movies... make a move, i dare you! LOL!

i assume it has a DVI input.

if no luck ont he tv, you coud find a large monitor and give a desktop with a tuner... heck, my PIII would do a tuner card just fine... full screen as well...

Alright guys, I do need a quick bit of help with this. As I said, the 7-blinks problem that this XBR960 has are well documented. The fix is to replace the following on the D board:

      (2) MCZ3001DB IC's
      (2) 1 Ohm 1/2W Fusible resistor
      (2) 1200uf 250v Filter Caps

I am more than willing to replace those for this sweet-ass TV. My only concern is that Sony stuff tends to blow generic replacements. Can anybody tell me where I can get genuine Shindengen MCZ3001DB IC's? There are a few suppliers that carry them online as well as eBay. But seeing as how this is a Sony, I want to make sure I am buying genuine replacements - not some Chinese replica.

ok, it is a tv, not a monitor.

        maybe this:

        looks legit to me...

Nice find! Definitely an awesome TV.
I love Trinitrons, too - the color on those aperture grill tubes is godlike.
I saw quite a few HD Trinitron TVs on my local CL last month as well. Should have gotten one, but kept delaying.
... Reminds me that I have to go to my old work place and see if they still have those 21" E540s. Boss said they were going to trash them sometimes later this year. I certainly hope they haven't done so yet!
          ----
Anyways, as far as the 7 blinks - I think you should change the filter caps and the 1/2W fusible resistor first. If problem persists, then change the ICs. If not, you got yourself a really nice TV. Did I mention it's very nice?

Panasonic made some very sharp tubes that were used in cheap Apex TVs. Very nice picture, I found two of them about two years apart. One of them is for my xbox and the other for TV.

I prefer CRT much more than LCD or plasma. It's real light and much healthier for the eyes IMO.

They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

Sorry ratdude, forgot to mention - this is a TV. A very nice TV with a plethora of inputs, HDMI, and dual tuners. I really hit the jackpot on this one!

It finished autoprogramming and I watched some of the QAM HD channels. They look A W E S O M E. I hate to say it but - this thing looks better than our Panasonic plasma, which I always thought had an excellent picture. Once I replace all those parts I will sit down and tweak with the service menu a bit to fix the slight overscan. That's really all she needs. The geometry is excellent and convergence looks fine.

Momaka, maybe you are right. I'm sure that if those IC's were kaput, she wouldn't power on at all. I might still replace them, just to be done with it. I will decide once I crack her open and order the parts.

Icing on the cake: I got the remote and manual with it too

I have decided, no way am I giving this TV away. It is mine, all mine .

got the last batch of mcz3001 from acme sales.never seen a fake anything from them.i buy a ton of stk's and dlp lamps from them.same with suburban.
and those sets were the last of the good crt sets.those ic's and solder joints are about the only issue till you wear out the crt.

'Real light'? Well, the only sources of 'real light' (as opposed to 'artificial light') would have to be the sun, or lightning. I guess fire started by lightning could be considered 'real light'. How about a fire started by pounding two rocks together, or rubbing two sticks. Is that 'real light'?

Perhaps a better question is "What ISN'T 'real light'?" Light is made up of photons. There is no way to distinguish between a photon generated by a star, a fire, a hot tungsten wire, or the phosphor in a plasma TV.

You DO realize that the phosphors generating the colors in a CRT TV are identical to the phosphors generating the colors in a plasma TV, don't you? A CRT accelerates an electron beam using a 25KV+ potential, which generates X-Rays, which are trapped by the lead glass in the screen. A plasma TV uses 200 volts maximum, no X-rays generated.

Now, I WILL grant you that getting exercise by moving a 150 lb plus TV around is possibly better that the exercise generated by moving a 75 lb plasma TV, or a 40 lb LCD TV.

The plasma is the family TV . This bad girl 16:9 WEGA is mine. I'll have her fixed up and in my room by the end of the month, and she's coming with me when I move out next year (going to have to call my friend with the truck again when that time comes )

kc8, thanks for the tip on the ACME website. They seem legit, they also seem like they know what they are doing. Unfortunately they don't carry the 1 ohm fusible resistors. I may order the mcz3001's from them anyway and get the caps and resistors from Digi-Key.

A bit irrational, sure... CRTs put me in a trance because of the intensity of the light. They produce more radiation (Some of which I feel is beneficial), and they have a much wider gamut of kelvin range because ACTUAL red green and blue light sources are constantly being combined to produce from I imagine 1000K to 20000K whereas LCDs are either stuck with several fluorescent tubes of the same kelvin temperature, or edge/grid lit LEDs.

Sure, there are sophisticated chemical reactions to transform liquid crystal into the appropriate shade (Of course not as accurate as CRT), but it's not the real light produced by individual bulbs of a CRT. It's a darn shame CRTs are out of production. Stupid enviromental nuts.

No, they use an electron gun on fluorescent screen, but still a much more powerful light source than fluorescent or led, and say what you will, more accurate.

This thing is impossible to get up stairs. It's sitting on the floor in the living room because we couldn't get it up the stairs. My mom is bitching up a storm and it's aggravating the hell out of me. I hate the can't-do attitude. I know there is a way to get this beast upstairs to my room.

We have wood floors on the stairs. I was thinking maybe I can get a board the size of the TV, strap the TV on, wrap the bottom of the board in a blanket. Have somebody push the TV up while I pull simultaneously with a strap.

Who has experience moving heavy shit up stairs? Does my idea sound viable?
