Why do these printers always get toner everywhere? Everything inside is covered in magenta toner.

The question is, why do HP printers in general always make messes of themselves? I scavenged a dead Business Inkjet 1100... all the colors were in there somewhere, I sprayed it out with the garden hose and gave up on it. (It's being modded into a case.) Our DeskJet 880C had about half a cartridge of half-dried black ink in it when we finally opened it up to see why it would only print in black and magenta; even after new cartridges and a good cleaning, it's not fixed...

Exactly why my next printer will be a Canon... Not to mention it costs me $90 to replace all the cartridges in my HP inkjet

I love my old Laserjet 4 though... Aside from the occasional exit jam, it works great for something that has been rained on for days, was used in a commercial office, and is over 13 years old.

funny that i dont actually own a printer......

in an office though, i have had quite a bit of experience with hp laserjets and pretty surprised how heavy printing can be done with minimal probs. certainly the inkjets are a waste of money. all inkjets really.

i think there will be some surprises in the future about the health risks of sitting next to a laser printer though......

I don't recall my second-hand HP LaserJet 4L ever having a paper jam.

It's still working great. (but it's getting hard to find toner for it)

try printing 300.000 pages through it an see how that goes.

we have a wonderful system. older files got scanned. a job gets reactivated and the fuckers print the entire file. like 1000 pages nonstop

i am surprised the 4000tn and 4050n lasted up so good. the 4000tn did get service kit at 260.000 though

Well, as long as you keep them busy, those lasers are great.
From my experience it is not the best for a home user, which does a few prints in a week.
I have had no luck with all my second hand lasers, the rubbers where always giving me paper jam problems until i lost patience.
My little Epson C62 Ink jet is not that problematic, and replacement cartridges are available for one or two buck`s each.
Even refilling is in that case no option, not cheaper and always a mess.

Well after much toying with the printer, I got it to start printing a calibration test page, but it is jamming against the back cover because a plastic deflector seems to be missing from the back of the fuser assembly.

It seems to be really flaky though, either gives a 54.2 error, 54.6 error a "reinstall transfer belt" error, or it paper jams

I had it outside anyway, so I brought my air compressor out and spent about 30 minutes cleaning toner off every inch of the printer internals.

I could probably make it work by replacing some more parts, but I'm not sure it's worth it. I see whole printers in working condition selling for under $100 on Ebay. Though I think it would be neat to have

BTW I noticed when I had it apart that the power supply appears to use UCC caps. I should have taken a closer look.

I still kinda miss my original HP Laserjet which I think was the very first model. Big heavy monster that opened up like a big clamshell for servicing. It was still working when I gave it to someone years ago.

Probably my favorite printer ever for black and white was the Laserjet 4 Plus with the add-on 500 sheet tray. My school used them almost exclusively, and they were printing all day, every day because they were shared between multiple computer rooms.

Sounds like you guys need to invest in a bottle of Rubber Rejuvinator... works wonders on belts and rollers.

We've got a HP 5si laser here at work that has 1.3m pages through it.

Oops... I was a bit off. To be exact, it has 1,089,180 pages through it.

125,726 since last maintenance.

All that, and only 4mb installed memory!

I upgraded my LJ4 from 6MB to 34MB, and damn, what a difference. Printing PDF's no longer takes ages. It used to pause between every page, now they just come right out in a continuous stream.
