    Dual G5 Psu (LiteON)

hey guys. Lurked a long time, but finally had to signup and post...

My Dual G5 blew up a few weeks back..just sittin there and POP! Monitors go dead. Machine becomes a 58lb paperweight

Anyways,, i'm out of applecare, cant get apple to repair it under the recall warranty..

SO i took the PSU out, and took it to an electrical engineer i work with (HDTV repair) Guy used to design power supplies. Sweet!

Guy traces it to an array of surface mount capacitors...and tell me what i didn't want to hear..."I need the schematics or this could take months!"

So i'm here..probably violating someones terms of service...wondering if anybody has found a schematic for the LiteOn Tesla power supply found in Dual G5 powermacs? Or is there a specific cap that always goes or what?

Im sunk here. Havent got the funds to pay to replace it.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Dual G5 Psu (LiteON)

99-44/100% sure there are no schematics for power supplies in general. Unless somebody worked for the firm that engineered, designed or built these and *borrowed* them. They're proprietary and guarded like State Secrets. As are motherboards, video cards, etc.

Most surface mount caps are unmarked and the only way to determine the value is to remove and measure them.

Clear Pictures of the PSU board top and bottom and the problem area will help. Overall shots then closer on anything that looks suspicious.

In your case, the *pop* sound has me concerned as to whether it caps or some other component in the PSU or on the motherboard?

Get us some pics of the mobo too.

We can help you sort it out from there.

[ EDIT: What tools and skills do you have? Do you believe you're capable of repairing this yourself with our guidance? ]

    [ EDIT 2: Curiosity - How much is a new PSU? ]

Hahah nope, that one was a dual AMD rig. That one was just horrible..sounded like firecrackers going off, sparks/fire just pouring out of the psu itself...

Luckily everything survived for the most part

My mac was a june 04. Bought it in 05.

The PSU board is at the TV shop i used to work at right now. I'll probably get it sometime this week i hope. God i hope the logic board isn't gone too. Applecare was supposed to replace the PSU on a previous logic board return, but never did. Now i'm stuck like this out of warranty. This is the 3rd time this year its gone down.

Ive been digging online lately to try n find a G5 thats been gutted and for sale in parts (ie missing vid card, hdd, etc) cause the way my luck is, a CPU or logic board went on the way out.

          You have the case?
What's the Apple part number and the manufacturer's model number?

I Have this same identical power supply, and plug it in no "click" from the relay. Fuse is good, bridge rectifier is good. main caps get power, but thats it. No swollen caps or burn marks anywhere on the board. Any ideas on what I could test?

I have a Liteon 614-0307 with a burned resistor and as other posts I need a value of that part. I'm hoping that maybe someone has one and could check R302 for a value. I would be eternally grateful.

What's the "real" model number. PA-###.....

There's also an API # on the board. What is it?

                                  Excellent. 100Ω, fusible, 3 watt

You have more issues if that is fried.

Search the forums using the Advanced Search for *6601* and select "Titles Only" button at bottom.

I bought a replacement power supply on ebay that being an liteon pa-6601-1a. When I received it I discovered they sent an Acbel supply instead. It seemed to be the exact size and voltages as the Liteon. I installed it and plugged it in. When I plugged it in I herd relays click but no start up no fan when pressing the switch. I was able to send it back but now I'm wondering if I have bigger problems that the power supply. I have my eye on a Liteon 6601 but wonder if I should cut my losses? Would appreciate your suggestions.

The AcBel would have been an easier fix than the LiteOn TeslaConverter model.
