    OH YES - HE DID!
I was far from the only one one throwing Fireballs at 'em too.
He tried spewing his happy-happy joy-joy 'fool the consumer' BS in a forum full of techs that fix PSU's and have a clue how they work.
He should have changed his handle to antec-target when he tried to pull that one off.
He had more cross hairs on his ass than a 12 point buck wandering through an NRA convention.

Somebody got himself a review sample. Without spoiling too much of the review (hoping to get it done for Sunday), I can tell you all this - the Power Cache capacitors are necessary for the TPQ 1200W. The 12V goes nuts on the scope without them.

but additional caps are not needed on other high watts models from other mfrs, right?

which would suggest design is flawed. and that was just attempt to fix what could be fixed, by adding caps outside the psu case.

Right. The massive Silverstone 1500W I reviewed a couple weeks ago needed no such thing, and it's even from the same OEM as this unit.

This one stayed in spec at all times, but without the Power Cache cables I saw the 12V swing from 30-70mV at regular intervals. With the PC cables, it stayed at 30mV.

Wait, what do I care. I'm not buying Antec crap anymore.

Antec designed themselves into a box there proper filter caps won't fit.

Heh - it's a big enough box. Not as big as the Silverstone 1500, but getting up there. Can't wait to pull it apart and see what's in there that mandated moving the caps onto the cables.

Some of the modular cables don't have the extra capacitors on them. Not sure how wise a move that is.

not enough capacitance in the box?
                    hehe....

do you remember values that some other high watts psus had on the 12V rail?
or at least do you have good pics of those, to augment brain memory...

also, give antec a trick question: who designed pi filter on this one?

Not right offhand - the Silverstone had a whole row of extra tall Teapo 3300's on the secondary as I recall. Six of them, I think, for all 8 12V rails.

dang, antec has REALLY drank the cup o' fail on this one. even powmax can make one work (for a short while) that has no external caps. and powmax is TONS cheaper than antec.

Not if you go by the numbers I'm seeing. This thing will sell.

As for Powmax, they couldn't even build a decent 300W unit let alone a 1200W. Not a valid comparison. Actually, I'm not sure they're even in business anymore.

ok, but, the point is that without the powercache the antec is a failure. i was overstating but all antec seems to be these days is bling.

Well think about it this way, RD. We all know here that the powercache thing wasn't added out of necessity, but rather to attract the (mostly pretty ignorant) pc gamer/enthusiast crowd and to command a high price.

Yes but OW says the Ripple goes to hell without the powercache thing.
That means the main PSU is crap.

I don't know if I'd go as far as saying it goes to hell - it tends to cycle from 30-70mV or so at regular intervals. That's technically well inside ATX spec.

Not the behavior of a stable unit though... anybody buying this should use those PC cables it comes with and nothing else (my CP-1000 sample has pin compatible modular cables for example). The Power Cache caps are in my mind still necessary whether it was in spec before they added them or not. Those capacitors add the stability the unit needs to be a solid performer, and they just decided to spin it as a feature rather than something the unit needed to be perfectly stable.

At any rate, I'm not going to call it a success or a failure just yet. Still need to do the hot tests and the autopsy, and then go into the scoring with an open mind

                                            A2251 L8100 Diode Drop .009V Resistance 2.6Ohm

Trouble shooting an A2251, it is giving me the behavior that all three USB jacks except the DFU port are reading 5.18V .24A, the DFU port draws no current.

Tried swapping that CD3217 from a donor, that changed to DFU port same behavior the adjacent USB port is now boot cycling, other side un effected.

Hindsight probably should have checked the diode drops first.

I removed L8100 to confirm that the PP1v1_S3 rail was "shorted" It reads about 2.4ohm and .009V on diode drop. The HighSide Low Side FETS before L8100 appear to be fine. Proper diode...

Hello guys, Asus G512LI, came with 3.3V drop down immediately .... 5V was stable ... after search and work found that +3VSUS_MUX is the issue (caused by U4701A TUSB1146RNQR) , left off the ic .. 3.3V came up again stable ... after power on laptop turn on for 3 seconds and power off ... VCCcore raise 0.9V for 1.5 seconds and drop down all other voltages do same thing ... Ram voltage , Gpu voltages, concerning VCCGT 0V all the time

                                            Drop-in replacement for STR-W6052S?
                                            by tfm
The main board of this LG washing and drying machine was damaged due to overvoltage. It is rated for 127V and was powered on 380V.

Inicial visual inspection revealed that only some components at the input of the SMPS were damaged:

Ironically, both fuses are intact. Probably the X2 cap and the bridge are also damaged. The whole board is immersed in an epoxy resin. I am removing it so I get access to the components.

The SMPS is built around an STR-W6052S, which is discontinued and I can't get a replacement....

                                            Hello,

While trying to fix an SMPS, I hear a ticking sound.
I've checked all capacitors, but none seem to be shorted.

I then suspected an issue with the flyback transformer which has 3 leads on the primary (used in a push-pull configuration ?) and one of them, which is always connected to GND has a resistance reading in the order of Mega ohms with any of the other 2 leads on the primary.

But I thought let's check the MOSFETs first::

The circuit also contains a PFC circuit, controlled by a UCC3818D (D stands for the SMD version),...

How low can germanium voltage drop be acceptable?
                                            by Crystaleyes
Just a question regarding the technical characteristics of Germanium:

I have four vintage germanium AD 161 & 162 transistors which all read just under 100mV voltage drop yet come up as fine on the component tester, so I'm wondering how low can this go with germanium devices and still be ok?

Only asking as I've never seen such a low volt drop...

The ones which are sold in the shops here read around 400mV, so I am assuming these are silicon remakes?
