Re: Can you test a silicone rectifier with a MM?
OK, so the transformer has 1 primary winding with Orange wires for the primary winding, input AC rating of 240VAC @50Hz.
It has TWO secondary windings:
First secondary winding has 33VAC rates @ 1.21A, the wires color are Blue(BLE) and Gray (GRY), VA rating of 40VA (33 * 1.21 = 39.93VA).
The Second set of the secondary winding has 33VAC rates @ 1.21A, the wires color are Red (RED) and Yellow (YEL). VA rating of 40VA (33 * 1.21 = 39.93VA).
So the transformer VA rating is about 80VA.Last edited by budm; 11-22-2015, 10:11 PM.Never stop learning

Re: Can you test a silicone rectifier with a MM?
I'm in Leeds centre tommorrow so if that transformer is ok I'll pick it up from farnell.
Just watched a video on how these transformers are made, so understand why stj was saying if insulation towards the end near the wires had worn away might be possible to repair otherwise your screwed. Learnt something today.
Daft question, do these simply reduce AC down to smaller levels, or convert AC to DC? Transformer is the name so you would think its convert to DC but I fail to understand how a simple copper coil can do that!Last edited by mikay786; 11-22-2015, 10:32 PM.Comment

Re: Can you test a silicone rectifier with a MM?
It is a step down transformer, you will have to connect the two secondary side with correct phasing (see the DOTs on the spec sheet) since they will be formed into 25-0-25. (two of the wires will be connected together. Look at you board to see which two Male terminals are tied together.
The terminals on the board are labeled to tell you which color wire goes to where, right?
BTW, the transformer probably has shorted turn.Last edited by budm; 11-22-2015, 10:38 PM.Never stop learning

Re: Can you test a silicone rectifier with a MM?
I see that they make 30V*2, 2.6A one: VTX-146-160-130
But you need to check the dimension if you do have the room or not.Never stop learning

Re: Can you test a silicone rectifier with a MM?
No it's not labelled on the board but I took a picture before hand
(thank god)
There's plenty of room it's pretty much empty space in the cabinet, downward firing sub. Better going with the more powerful one?Attached Filesif you find these attachements useful please consider making a small donation to the site

Re: Can you test a silicone rectifier with a MM?
With the 25V you will not get the same power output as the original 33V, the 30V one will be closer. Lower Voltage = Lower power output.Last edited by budm; 11-22-2015, 10:55 PM.Never stop learning

It does no give the AMP rating.
VTX-146-120-230 2x 115 0-30 xxx 10 55 45 x 98 1.32
VTX-146-120-230 is not listed in the datasheet which looks to be made by the same company using the same P/N.Attached Filesif you find these attachements useful please consider making a small donation to the site

by chth96I read EBOOK of Testing Electronic Component and found that
"In order to test the small blue resin coated ceramic disk capacitor which has 104 50v specification,it is possible to test this small ceramic capacitor by making use of analogue meter.
Set to times 10Kohm that has 12v output from the probe to check disorder of ceramic capacitor.
It is not uncommon that testing result of digital capacitance meter is okay,But It show shorted reading when you check it with analogue meter."
Is it really possible to test small ceramic disc capacitor with analogue...-

This is my first attempt at troubleshooting a board like this, I know I could just buy a new board but I'm curious to figure out how this works. I've been testing different components in the evenings this week and I think the problem is with the IC failing to start up for some reason. When the board is plugged in there is no standby voltage.
Then today it randomly sprung to life like a zombie but shortly died thereafter. I have no idea why it would have done that and its the first time I've seen it running. I discharged capacitors on the board last night, then it was sitting today.... -
by chth96Hello
I have power adaptor(220V/input, 12V 1.2A/output) which has symptom of fluctuating output DC voltage between 11.5V-12.2V.
So I opened its plastic case and when switched it on, I heard constant tik tik sound from inside its PCB.
I measured DC voltage between negative and positive pin of the largest capacitor(400v 10uf) and it was measured contant 300V.
I also measured ESR value of all capacitors and I noticed that one of capacitor(KMG 16v 470uf), which located in the secondary side, have high ESR value(10 ohm),So I replaced it with same specification NXH capacitor.... -

by bauto601Back in 2020 i bought a (2nd hand) compact ATX psu to replace my current one. My PC case only fits very short ATX power supplies so i didn't really have the choice of buying a decent 80Plus unit. The current unit is a modded YoungYear unit that i made a thread about a while ago:
A "nice" YoungYear unit? - Badcaps
The "new" unit is a KDM-M6480 480W psu, the 480W number is a typical KDM bullshit claim of course, but the 24A rating on the 12V rail seemed reasonable and the "Active PFC" claim gave me a bit of hope that this was going to be decent-ish.... - Loading...
