Hello everyone, need help in Bios unlocking this Lenovo 840 G5. I tried with the HP unlock tool on the larger Bios chip but it didn't work. So I am uploading both bios chips could anyone remove the bios lock? Many thanks!

Not sure if this is important, but when I boot and press F10, before getting the Bios Administrator Password screen, I get this screen which say PROPERTY OF GHD then the HP logo and then the message Protected by HP Sure Start.

I tried looking for the string "PROPERTY OF GHD" in both the 16MB and 32MB files but did not find anything. Not sure what to try next?

Ok, so figured it out and will post the solution in case someone has the same issue. Unlocking the 32MB file did not to the trick. Used RcUnlocker on the 16MB chip and that did the trick it is now unlocked. Many thanks to all of you and thanks Peste!

                        Hi everyone,
I have a HP 840 G5 that is admin password locked (abandoned from a company). I have been trying a good way to unlock it and reading up on almost the entire thread here it seems reading out the 32MB chip patching it with RCUnlocker is what most people say. I did this (was a Winbond 25Q256JVEQ chip) and to my surprise RCUnlocker told me that the 32MB file was not compatible and I should try a 16MB file. My two questions to anyone who could bring more insight:

                        1. Is RCUnlocker indeed not compatible with 32MB BIOS files? It seems a lot of people have run it successfully
                        2. Is it so that SOME 840 G5 are password locked in the 32MB BIOS and others in the 16MB? It seems very inconcistent.

                        Thanks in advance!

Read the previous post to yours. I mistakenly reported it as a Lenovo 840 G5 but it is an HP 840 G5. Good luck!

That is what led up to these questions, I suspect you are right, but in other replies in this thread it is clearly stated to be the 32Mb chip that should be patched (which seems impossible to me using RCUnlocker). Seems a bit inconsistent and would be interesting to understand if this is different in different versions of the 840 G5.

rddube I was hoping to not have to desolder the 16MB chip (since I successfully connected to the 32Mb using wires). Just to double check: How did you connect to the 16Mb chip? Desolder? Clip? Wires? It seems that with wires my flash device says (no connection to IC) and at the same time a LED is flashing yellow on the motherboard (probably powered backwards from the chip flasher).

The 16mb chip is on the other side of the motherboard, so you are going to take the motherboard out. I always desolder the bios they are so easy to desolder and use one of these attached SOP8 to DIP8 (I have different sizes) and resolder onto the board. You can always use the little board that comes with the CH341 programmer - just make sure you've got pin 1 on pin 1, etc. I never use the clips they are junk as far as I'm concerned.

OK, so everything worked out just fine, let me share my learnings from this:
                                  1. HP 840 G5 more often that not seems to have password configured in the EC chip on the backside of the motherboard, in my case a Winbond 25Q128JV SMD chip.
                                  2. This chip can't be read or programmed when connected to the motherboard, there seems to be a protection kicking in. Must be desoldered.
                                  3. The chip can easily be read and programmed with CH341A programmer when desoldered, and RCUnlocker worked on the first try.
                                  4. Beware to read more than once and compare readouts, also after programming, read back several times and file compare.
                                  5. Be very careful when resoldering to use enough flux and flow the connecting pins and pads generously.

All in all it worked great, but it was tricky to arrive at this solution due to the contradictory information in this thread. At least this procedure should work for all devices with the same motherboard type than mine.
Thanks rddube for the help to arrive at the right answer.

Sorry for the long story. I have a Dell Latitude 5530 (i7) laptop (South Peak 15 MLK MB DDR4 203102-1 FK8VG$JA) with an admin BIOS password that I want to remove. Service Tag: HYKFPT3. Other than that the laptop worked OK.

I found a CH341A Black and went looking for the BIOS chip on the motherboard. After trying to read one chip that was a firmware chip but not the BIOS I think I found the BIOS chip labeled Winbond 25Q256JVEN. Altogether I think I found 4 different firmware chips in the laptop. The BIOS chip is a WSON8 6x8. I used the CH341A, NeoProgrammer, and a cheap pogo pin clip...

                                          Hi everyone,

I’m a student currently locked out of the BIOS on my HP EliteBook 830 G6. I bought the laptop second-hand, and the previous owner didn't provide the password. I really need access to the BIOS to change storage settings and boot orders for my studies.

                                          System Details:
                                          • Model: HP EliteBook 830 G6
                                          • Processor: Intel Core i5 (8th Gen)
                                          • Serial Number: 5CG0080LKD
                                          • Halt Code (from 3rd fail): qeh11u1kst

I'm hoping someone here can help me generate an SMC.bin file or provide a master password that works for this generation. Any guidance on how to get back...

Hello, I have an old Dell G3 3579 (ST: 2WQ7LP2-8FC8) with a newer 8FC8 BIOS password. I have successfully attached to the flash chip (W25Q128JVSQ) on the motherboard with a CH341A programmer and made several modifications using Intel FIT (e.g., allow software SPI write) without bricking. I was also able to boot to a modified GRUB shell where I attempted to edit many BIOS security related options like BIOS Guard/Lock, Flash Signature Override, ME FW Image Re-Flash, etc.

Unfortunately, some of these modifications like to Intel BIOS Guard failed because it is fused into the PCH. Also,...

                                          Hello Hello,

I have been browsing the site and gotten so much useful info from here, including extremely helpful boardviews and several other very useful types of information. I am very grateful to this community, as I have actually eeked out a living from buying salvage PC's & Macbooks and repairing them. So, thank you all in advance!

I have searched and found some useful information regarding my issue, but my case is a bit different than the info I'm finding. But if anyone here can give me any useful advice, it would be highly appreciated.
