    Asus X50SL bios/help needed

Good day folks. Today it came to pass that my dad's old faithful Asus X50SL notebook lived its last bit of life and died...or rather it's in a coma The problem is as follows: sometimes it posts, other times it doesn't. It just stays there with a blank screen, grinding the CD drive over and over. You remove all power, it would sometimes get it going and other times it doesn't. You leave it alone overnight, try it again, same story: sometimes it fires up, other times it doesn't. I thing it's a GPU issue (it's an AMD), because I blasted the GPU with some hot air knowing they're prone to failure, it worked a couple of times, but then it went back to only starting occasionally whenever it feels like it, with no discernible pattern.

The reason I believe it may not be related strictly to the GPU however is because it also loses its BIOS settings when it does decide to come on. You'd save them again, it would remember them for a while, until the next time it fails to start. As long as it posts OK it remembers them - it's only when it fails to post that it restores itself to factory defaults, regardless of whether or not you pull the CMOS battery, which I undoubtedly checked and replaced a couple of times now.

Just for the heck of it, since there's nothing to lose at this point, I want to try flashing its BIOS. During one of its successful startups, I actually updated it from ASUS via the BIOS itself, but it didn't solve the issue.....still, deep inside I know it's probably a GPU or motherboard issue since the display also goes completely blank sometimes all of a sudden....hard to track down really.....what do you guys think ? Can anyone help ? Cheers and thanks.

Try it with different RAM and without the DVD drive.

I doubt the DVD drive can cause it to fail to post, but doesn't hurt to try and remove as many things from that board as possible....I reckon both the 1GB RAM sticks are fine. I tested them individually in different slots and the same thing happen....sure, it could very well be that both are bad since I don't recall successfully completing a memtest86 test with them - it would freeze before it would get to complete it, although it wouldn't catch any errors either....

Unfortunately no, even with different RAM and no DVD drive the laptop still blanked out during a memtest...I can't quite correlate the blanking of the screen with the loss of BIOS settings though...

ASUS TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI - BIOS Help
          by grimacelord
          Hello,

I have spent the last hour on this and I guess this is just over my head, so here I am.

I have an ASUS TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI motherboard here that needs to have the BIOS updated in order to accept the latest CPUs.

The BIOS chips seem to come as a set of two: GD25B64ESIG and GD25B128ESIG. My guess is one of them is a fail-safe for the main BIOS? I really don't know. Or one of them is ME and other is BIOS? I don't know.

Anyway, I took dumps of both chips and then downloaded the latest update for this motherboard from ASUS's website...

Asus ROG Ally X -RC72LA - changed hidden bios settings with 'Smokeless-UMAF', won't get past boot logo

ASUS ROG Ally X - (Handheld Gaming PC)
          Model No: RC72LA
          Serial No: SBNVKD001014459

Hi all, I've spent the past week digging through the forums and guides to try correct my foolish mistake of changing hidden settings while tinkering around, and to be honest my heads overloaded so I'm hoping you'll be able to help.

I used a tool called 'Smokeless-UMAF' to access usually hidden settings in the bios. I tweaked one or two 'safe' things but made the mistake of tweaking a lot of settings under 'USB/Thunderbolt Configurations' when I didn't know what they did. For...

          ASUS TP500LA BIOS request/repair/merge?
          by jbonavita
Hi, my laptop wont boot at all
With original bios no POST, only LED lights
With alternative BIOS from model TP500LN (flashed via programmer) the notebook works again
          Some issues
          A- with bios from 500LN, it won't update from bios of model 500LA (from 500LN v203 to 500LA v300)
B- If updated from 500LN version 203 to 300, the battery stops being recognized

          Things I tried

1- Update / clear ME: Took the non working bios, made a backup, and did this: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/troubl...theory/trouble...

Dell 9010 MT BIOS Update Always Fails
          by mikeybass
Hi, I hope some one has some advice for me. I searched the forums but didn't see anything relevant. I acquired two identical Dell 9010 Mid Tower computers from a business office upgrade (they were going to throw them out). Both of them have the same motherboard (00F82W). One of them works flawlessly. The other one had a corrupted BIOS. I tried flashing numerous main BIOS and EC files from the internet, but none of them worked. I decided to copy the main BIOS and EC from the working 9010 computer and successfully flashed the corrupted BIOS. This got the computer able to boot again and run norm...
