Hi all
A friend brought a Surface Laptop 5 to me for a clean Windows install.
Simple operation... First the laptop did not start, battery was flat.
I attached a charger and started the original recovery image restore.
Problem is, that this also contains a newer BIOS amongst the drivers, and after install, the first restart also initiated a firmware update. I was next to the laptop so i saw what happened. The firmware update consists of 4-5 (not sure) separate steps, marked by different color progress bars. One step succeeded, then the laptop stopped because the battery went flat.
Later i learned that this laptop needs a higher power charger . This one was not able to charge it but only operate it (until it couldn't)
After that, the laptop entered a bootloop: logo> few seconds> black screen > logo and so on.
I asked a colleague with LBE Pro to try to fix the dump.
Ha was very kind and sent me the corrected dumps. One repaired and one repaired with ME clean.
None worked. Later is discovered a mistake here. I use a XGecu T48 programmer and when i save a flash chip, the dump is 272 bytes longer because it also contains the status/config registers
When i programmed the repaired dump, that one was the firmware only, 32MB in length, so the registers were not set.
The original chip had S9 (QE), S16(ADS) and S21 (DRV0) set. Without the extra 272 bytes, the programmer did not set these.
My colleague made another try and sent me a third repaired dump. When this one did not work either, i got suspicious. We desoldered again the chip and when we tried to read it, we realized that probably with the last soldering we fried it.
Original chip was W25R256JWPQ
Problem is that then i wasn't able to find one, only 25Q256JWPQ (without RPMC) so i ordered this one.
Programmed the chip and of course was not working. Here we realized that mistake with status registers, set them as they were and after some waiting, the laptop started.
Here comes the problem.
I can enter the bios, after a VERY long time. Serial number and all data seems right.
I reinstalled Windows (just in case). During the procedure, at least 2 bios zones were correctly reprogrammed by Windows (of course during a reboot)
I saw multiple times when for a split second, another update windows appeared and disappeared.
Now it acts like this: I get the logo, after some long time, i get the logo with the red stripe and open padlock (because Secure boot is disabled at the moment), again logo, maybe another logo with padlock and so on. After minutes, it boots.
In Device manager i get an explanation mark next to Firmware > Surface ME, saying: This device cannot start (Code 10) The requested operation was unsuccessful
The serial number of the Surface Laptop 5 is 0F01EXK23063FB
Now i am really uncertain if:
1. The replacement chip which does not have RPMC is not compatible, the laptop cannot report the successful firmware update and does not load ME in Windows. If i check in device manager, it says Firmware version 0 but also says Firmware is up to date
2. The dump still has error(s). I am still unsure if the ME area had the problems as the process crashed between two phases.
I can and i will attach the dump, still need to find a way (put it in a Google Drive or something)
I can also attach the repaired dumps.
I also have photos of the BIOS screen and the 2 successful firmware update process.
Please help me to fix this one
Best regards,
JanosComment

Hello Sparo
I know that my reply comes late but i also ordered another flash chip from China and the delivery was kinda long.
The chip replacement did not solve anything, but your dump works perfectly, thank you very much!
First time i got scared, because the laptop rebooted several times, later tried some BIOS update, but in the end now the bott process is normal and laptop works as intended.
Thanks again!

Hi Sparo
Thank you very much, i will test and get back to you with the result.
This will probably be in a few weeks, because i am not that great with hot air soldering and "my man" is on vacation.

by zeniusHello, I have an old Dell G3 3579 (ST: 2WQ7LP2-8FC8) with a newer 8FC8 BIOS password. I have successfully attached to the flash chip (W25Q128JVSQ) on the motherboard with a CH341A programmer and made several modifications using Intel FIT (e.g., allow software SPI write) without bricking. I was also able to boot to a modified GRUB shell where I attempted to edit many BIOS security related options like BIOS Guard/Lock, Flash Signature Override, ME FW Image Re-Flash, etc.
Unfortunately, some of these modifications like to Intel BIOS Guard failed because it is fused into the PCH. Also,...-

by chriswfrye21Hi everyone,
I’m working on an HP 255R 15.6" G10 Notebook PC that has a BIOS Administrator / Setup password I cannot bypass. I can boot Windows normally, but F10 is completely blocked unless the password is entered. I do not know the password.
This is not a Power‑On Password. This is a BIOS Admin password stored in NVRAM, and the system will not allow BIOS access at all.
I’m posting here to get help identifying the correct procedure, dump, or method needed to clear the password on this model. System Details

because of this BIOS password lock. I have no idea who set the
password or when.
Important: The Unlock Key Hint Number changes every boot (dynamic).
