    ASUS GL552VW shutting down randomly.

Hello there dear sirs, i have really weird problem in shop today.

As i mentioned, it's Asus ROG GL552VW that came with random (in idle, after 5 or 20 minutes, maybe every 3 minutes for few times, then working for 20 minutes again) shutdowns. Like, no restarts, no bsod. Proper shutdown.

I checked temps ofc, gpu is in idle in lower 60ties, cpu lower 50ties. There is no marking that would suggest water damage, no corrosion at all, no previous repair attempts. (Once was changed thermal paste in other shop, but that laptop worked for a year after).

It happens on AC or on battery, in BIOS, that does not matter. I can measure every required voltages (19 on pwr, 3.3 on pwr button, 5 and 12V lines), no mosfet is in short, no visible damage to any component.

Do you have please any prior experiences with this laptop and what the heck can cause this?

    mobo is revision 2.0

edit : I also tried to run it "naked", with only nvme drive and one (known good) memory stick (second hdd, wifi card, keyboard, touchpad, usb board disconnected). Same result.

Try replacing CMOS battery, these things are weird when that is in an "intermittent" state, not dead but also far from putting out the 3 volts it should.

    A working TV? How boring!

@cha0swaver133, you have done a good job of eliminating all the common problems.

If you have more time to work on this, some things that you can try are:

          1) voltage glitches - that cause any of the power-good (PG) signals to go low. This is usually hard to diagnose, especially when all the different PGs are tied together (open drain) and fed to EC/PCH. You could monitor the signal (at EC/PCH) and see if it transitions low. Although the problem is to find out if the PG transition is the cause or the symptom

          2) Thermal trip - I am not saying this is triggered by actual over temperature condition but by a fault in the signal. The CPU has THRMTRIP# signal which when driven low, (active low signal) almost immediately trips the computer, and depending on the configuration of PCH registers, the system could remain off (S5 state) or restart. This signal is driven by CPU to PCH requesting a critical over-temperature situation, requesting for an instant power transition. I think your best way is to monitor the signal and see for any glitches or transitions. Ideally, this should never be driven low, although at boot time it might be. But once the system is booted say to the OS, this signal should always stay high.

          Good luck.
