I'm looking into fixing up a busted up Lappy. The LCD screen is all cracked up. It only displays a one inch by one inch area in the upper left hand corner that seems to work. The rest of it looks like a silver and white "Gateway" cow. Now when I hook it up to and external monitor I get the xp start bar but when the desktop opens it defaults back to the busted LCD and turns the signal off to the external monitor. I tried the bios settings to change this but I've had no luck so far. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to take it apart and totally disconnect the busted LCD and run it that way? Maybe I need to boot in safe mode and change some windows display settings to get it to hold the external monitor signal. The thing is an Acer Aspire 5600, Model# ZB2. Yes this is a friends junk lappy. It was found in a trash bin. I hate laptops!

Re: Acer 5600 Lappy
Well I got around the busted display only to find that the Windows Media Center OS is password protected. There isn't anything for me in this repair job "like money" so I'm just going to tell her its trashed. Maybe she will just give it to me to part out. I just dont feel like messing with it right now. It was found in a trash bin. It can go back to the trash bin for all I care."It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so."

Re: Acer 5600 Lappy
holding the Fn key and pressing a key with a monitor symbol (usually same color as the Fn key) switches through where the laptop puts out the signal (internal LCD, external or both together..)
seems like the driver is set to the internal LCD by default, so it turns off the external monitor as soon as the graphics driver is loaded.
if it's a 14.1" LCD its pretty cheap to get a replacement on ebay. only thing you need to make sure is that the connector matches the one of the current busted LCD.
i still have a laptop display out of a toshiba refurb i did lying around somewhere. bought one in better condition but with missing parts to give my one one some more lifetime. didn't need the 14.1" LCD that was in the parts unit as my screen was perfectly fine.
edit: quick google search reveals the following:
Pentium M/Celeron M Notebook
Original manufacturer: Quanta Computer
identical models: acer Aspire 5600 Series, acer TravelMate 4220 Series
display: 15.4" WXGA (1280x800) in matte or glossy
model of the matte display: LG-Philips LP154W01
pentium M notebook. so it would be worth fixing imho..Last edited by Scenic; 06-11-2010, 04:51 PM.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.
We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.
Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

Re: Acer 5600 Lappy
it's a problem because i keep searching on google after i posted.. and the 10minute limit keeps forcing me to clutter up the thread with multiple posts instead of adding stuff to the first one i've posted..
that list with compatible LCDs was 1minute out of the 10min. limit.. -.-
