    Asus N61Jq no image

    Hi everyone.

I have received an Asus N61Jq with motherboard n61ja rev 2.1

It boots but without image, and debug card shows some codes and stops at 61.

The cpu mounted is a core i5-560M. I think this cpu is not supported on this platform, so I have tested with an intel core i7-740qm, but things goes from bad to worse.

With the i7-740 only shows codes 19, 55 and stops. (same as with no ddr modules)

The original cpu should be a core i7-720qm, I don't know way the i7-740 doesn't work.

I have tested some bios but nothing changes.

All voltages are present and ddr modules are good.

What do you think? should I check another cpu? and wich model?

You need to look at micro-code in bios to find out cpu compatibility on this platform. Since its booting with i5-560M, i think cpu is not problematic here. Why not measure voltage on LVDS Pins. Btw, backlit is present??On external display shows??

      Since its booting with i5-560M,
It boots with this cpu, but seems that hungs giving few more post codes than with i7.

How can I test cpu micro-code compatibility in bios?

      Thanks in advance.

Its bit difficult to explain about micro code concept but i can give you a list of compatible cpu for your mb if you post your bios dump here.

Clean CPU socket and RAM slot with contact cleaner. Check if pressing down on the CPU changes anything.

I have open the original bios with mmtool and this is the result:

No positive results. Same as before.

Here is a copy of the original bios:

Seems that CPU ID: 06E5 is for Core I7-720QM, i7-820QM and i7-920XM.

The weird thing is that with the i7 tested hung quickly than with i5.

I7 tested is good. (tested on other mobo)

Seems that this mobo should mount a core i5-430 or similar.

I don't have any PC3-8500 ram, i'm trying to get one module to test it.

In the mean time i have tested some signals and DRAM_RST_GPU is always at low level. I don't know if is because the post is not reached the end or is a gpu issue related.

I have managed to get the i7-720qm show the same post codes than i5.

Seems that all bios tested were bad.

With uefitool I have replaced the bios portion with the last from asus website. (N61JqAS.212)

But problem with video is not solved. (post are not completed, and debug card last code is 6D)

Also the fan is working very fast, so i decided to put a clean ME region, but nothing change.

Anyone knows what "6D" means for AMI bios? (sorry is not 6D but D6)

Your bios backup is from a N61Ja .What part numbers do you have on the green sticker ,on the ram slot.

Seems that both models are almost identical.

I have flashed the data from your bios with no positive results.

Debug card keep showing the same D6 code.

A weird thing is that pch does not re-writes the ME region. (data in bios chip has the same content when reading again with external programmer)

Mi experiences with other bios is that one of the first things a laptop does with this cpu architecture is write the ME region.

                                I will appreciate your comments.

                                  Hi,
I have investigated the HDA_DOCK_EN# trying to find out why ME region is not reprogrammed by the pch, and encountered that mosfet Q2001 was short-circuited between gate and source.

This mosfet has to do with flash descriptor security.

I have replaced it but nothing changes. (it keeps showing D6 code)

Voltage at gate of mosfet Q2001 is high at boot, but not enough time to do the pch/bios marriage.

I have attached the schematic, just in case someone wants to investigate.

A little big mistake, gate of mosfet Q2001 is low, so drain is high.

I don't know if this circuit works at the time when bios ME region has to be "updated" at first use. (when a clean bios is booted and pch writes its own custom bios code)

Probably pch or embedded controller are damaged.
