MacBook Pro 820-00239 not turning on

    Hi all,

I got a MacBook Pro A1706 (820-00239) with no liquid damage, just suddenly stopped working and is not turning on. Before sending it to a local repair shop, I saw there was a short on PPBUS_G3H but couldn't identify the problem.

Machine was back last week from the shop, with a fixed PPBUS_G3H (no short, correct voltage) but said they couldn't fix it because the "CPU is probably dead".

After checking it again myself, I'm not sure how they've reached their conclusion since all S3 rails are missing.

    So, to conclude:
    * PPBUS_G3H, PPBUS_PMIC are present and good
    * All S4 rails are present and good
    * All S3 rails are 0 volts, no short to ground

    Will appreciate any lead...
    Thanks!

It's unusual to have all S4 rails and no S3 rails, double check it's indeed what's happening, and check if you get any S0 rail as well. What's the current consumption of the machine (without battery)?

    Check PM_SLP_S5_L, PM_SLP_S4_L, PM_SLP_S3_L.

      Will re-verify today all rails.
Still waiting for my USB-C amp meter to arrive, will post results as soon as I get it.

      Thanks!

Re: MacBook Pro 820-00239 not turning on

        Measured some voltages now:

        PPBUS_G3H: 13.05v
        PP3V3_G3H: 3.35v

        PP5V_S5: 5.12v
        PP3V3_S5: 3.34v

        PP1V8_S4: 1.79v
        PP3V3_S4: 3.34v
        PP5V_S4: 5.12v

        PP1V0_S3: 0v
        PP1V2_S3: 0v
        PP1V8_S3: 0v

        PP1V8_S0: 0.015v
        PP3V3_S0: 3.34v
        PP5V_S0: 5.14v

        SMC_PM_G2_EN: 3.34v

        PM_SLP_S5_L: 3.34v
        PM_SLP_S4_L: 3.33v
        PM_SLP_S3_L: 3.33v

        * Still missing all S3 rails but some of the S0 rails are present
        * Just noticed that I got the board back from the shop with a missing U7900
        * Nothing gets hot on the board, even after it was plugged for 20 mins or so

U7900 missing can definitely explain why you're not getting PP1V2_S3… Maybe the reason why you're not getting PP1V8_S3 either.

Athough if U7900 was removed, maybe it means there was an issue with PP1V2_S3, which could have damaged RAM and/or CPU itself.

            Thanks for all your help!
I've order a donor board and will try to replace the missing U7900 and see if it makes any difference.

General question about MacBook power rails for repair.
              by SarcasticOP
I am looking at an A2337 and found this for the order of power rails and what they do. Can this be confirmed before I dive into hunting down power rails that do not exist or are not neccisary?
              • PPBUS_G3H (12.6V-12.8V)
                • This is the main power rail that supplies power to the entire system. Check this rail first, as it must be present for other power rails to work.
              • PP3V42_G3H (3.42V)
                • This power rail is derived from PPBUS_G3H and is used to power the SMC (System Management Controller) and other essential circuits. It should be present if PPBUS_G3H is working correctly.
              • PPVRTC_G3H (3.3V)

Macbook Pro A2141 020-01700-A GPU Artifacts then no S5 rails
              by skwarszczow
              Hello everyone,

This is my first post on the forum

I recently purchased a MacBook A2141 from a colleague at work, which had issues with the dedicated GPU. The system occasionally displayed artifacts on the screen and sometimes experienced kernel panics related to the GPU. Interestingly, applying pressure to the VRAM module would temporarily resolve the artifact issues, which made me optimistic about the ease of repair.

              Board: 020-01700, Config: Intel i7, 512GB SSD, 16GB Ram.

Before completing the purchase, we decided to erase...

              Hello everyone,

I'm currently diagnosing a MacBook Pro A1707 motherboard that does not power on. I've gathered some data but am stuck and need expert advice.
Note that i'm a beginner in electronics and i'm trying to learn while trying to repair this macbook that my work gave me. I'm really curious and love understanding how thing works and i already learned so much.

Only one usb c port is taking 20v and have 12.5v on PPBUS_G3H. when trying other ports, 2 are not going to 20v and one is going to 20v but the CD3215 is getting really hot.

              Observations...

MacBook Pro 2018 with Activation Lock
              by envym
              Hi everyone!

I have a 2018 MacBook Pro (with Sequoia OS) that I've been using for years with no problem. I recently received an M2 MacBook Pro so I'm mostly using it and not the 2018 one, but since a friend of mine needs a computer, I thought I could restore my 2018 and give it brand-new-like to my friend.

I tried using the built-in tool to restore the MacBook (Settings > General > Transfer or restore > Delete) but it got stuck when trying to remove the Find Device configuration (it asked me for the password for my old Apple ID -now I use the same account but...

A1990 MacBook Pro 15" Turning on, loads then boot loops, fan spin slow and then fast
              by Stephen
Got a MacBook Pro 15" A1990 with a board issue, The board turns on, I did a DFU revive to see if it needed a firmware patch, that was successful, however the board just keeps boot looping and turning off and on very quickly. Obviously the DATA Is there, but it wont even launch into recovery, it will just die and turn back on with Apple logo, once it gets really hot it dies, if the laptop sits for the day and is cool, it will turn on then get hot within 1 min then die and turn itself on and repeat. Once it does that it turns itself on and off repeatedly in seconds. I put a thermal camera...
