HP Pavilion G6 - HDD Problem

    Dear Technicians,

I have got an HP g6 with mainboard R13. It works fine except for hard disk. it boots up fine then when the laptop wants to read the hard disk, it restarts unexpectedly. I connected the disk to a desktop pc, then it worked fine. I have replaced the original hard disk by another healthy one but the laptop gives the following error at start up, instead of restarting:
"smart disk check has detected an imminent failure"
hard disk spins but not properly. hdd voltage is only a 5v which is properly provided to the hard disk. the laptop boots fine using a bootable Win7 flash drive.
I replaced the caps located on Sata data lines, but it had no change. there is about 0.18v on each Sata data line that connects to HDD.

So I think this Sata connection between HDD and PCH is faulty because of a PCH fault. Do you think this is correct?
does anyone have any experience on such a problem?

    now my question is:
What is the best way to connect this hard disk to PCH using another port such as DVD-RW SATA port or any USB port or Wifi port or so on?

the board schematics file is attached.

    thanks

I will do a Bios update.
I discovered that the DVD drive works fine and is bootable into win7. how can I connect HDD to PCH using a connection other than SATA0?

thanks, but in this way, the laptop can not have a DVD drive. is there any way to have both HDD and DVD drive inside the laptop that has a burned Sata0?

Caspian, you first try with ec bios flash. I have faced many cases where hdd doesnt detect coz of ec bios corruption viz Lenovo g570, dell n5050 etc etc. So that should be the first step. I dont know whether you have already done that or not. Else, it is likely to be pch fault. You simply cant run both hdd/dvd if it is due to pch fault.

Re: HP Pavilion G6 - HDD Problem

I have not programmed Bios and EC yet.
Now, I discovered the laptop can not recognize the old hard disk, but it can recognize and read the new hard disk. but it gives the smart check error at startup as below:
Smart Disk Check Error 0301: "smart disk check has detected an imminent failure"

I searched the net and found out that this error means the hard disk spins slower than what is normal. this happens in really old hard disks which are going to fail.

So, I do not know what kind of fault can lead to such an error in the laptop whereas I know my new hard disk is fine. Even my old hard disk works fine in a desktop PC.

is there any idea on what is defective?

Check the drive smart status on the pc with software, such as hard disk sentinel. If the drive is going bad make a backup if theres anything you need,or try and clone it to the new drive.

thank you SMDFlea. I checked the disk by hard disk sentinel. It discovered some Smart errors too. Then, I found out both my hard disk are kind of faulty, even though they still work. Thus, the mainboard is probably not faulty.
                  thanks for all the replies.
