    Macbook Pro M2 Pro Liquid damage motherboard repair

    Hi All,

    I just got a Macbook Pro M2 Pro from marketplace for a repair project. There was no power, neither on Magsafe nor on all USB C. So there was PD negotiation as Magsafe led was not coming on at all. Its all dead. After opening the Macbook, I found liquid damage and I know exactly where there was a liquid damage.

    I have cleaned the motherboard properly with Isopropyl but looks like 2 of the SMD caps/res were blown so they came off while cleaning. I could see brown burn mark on the bottom plate as well.

    Can someone please let me know what are these components. I didn’t power up the board, as two SMD’s are off now. I don’t want to mess up anything. If these are just redundant capacitors is it safe to power the board and check? I am attaching pics for reference, this circuit is directly below right fan, board facing up.

    Please help me out.

      As this look to me coupling capacitors, I powered on the board. Here is what I have tried till now.

      1. ⁠There is only 5V and 3.3V rail present. So looks like PD controller is not negotiating 20V. I didn’t find 20V anywhere. Nor near battery connector.
      2. ⁠Board does not seem to be short. 2R7 inductor near battery connector is giving 385 Ohms.

      What else I can try?

          Hi everyone, I’m troubleshooting a MacBook Pro 2020 Intel logic board 820-01949 with liquid damage on the USB-C ports side. The spill was mainly in the area near U8320_SWR, U8300_SWR and U6300, and there were a few nearby SMD ceramic capacitors that looked dark/blackened. The area around U3100_R did not look heavily affected visually, but the problematic port seems to be associated with that controller.

          Original Issue
          The device suffered liquid damage, causing a short circuit on the logic board.
          Near the audio jack area, the CR852 capacitor pad was severely burned, creating a clear short-circuit path. The board could not power on properly.

          Work Performed
          Removed the short circuit by drilling through the board (bypassing the short path) in the CR852 area.

          Hi,

          another day, another Macbook air to repair

          I got this laptop with liquid damage. The LCD and webcam connector was broken and I soldered it off. Also PIN 57 PPVOUT_LCDBKLT was shorted. I removed the pads and short is gone. (See pictures).
          Also UP950 was shorted and I removed it from the board. Short is now gone but part is not on the board anymore. Unfortunately I´ve no spare part at hand.

          Now the board is stuck at 5V and 0.02 A. Tested on both USC-C ports. The ports looks gook with the tester and outputs (3V, 5V and 1.5V) are present.

          I wonder if anyone has any ideas on what may cause this. I have a macbook pro 13" M1 that had some liquid spilt on it. The touchbar no longer works and the device will power on for 30 seconds and then shuts off and repeats perpetually. I am new to repairs and am just wondering if there is possibly anything specific that may be causing this behaviour that i could test or replace or if the laptop is a complete loss and i shouldnt waste my time. Any help is greatly appreciated.

          Got a MacBook Pro M1 Pro 16'' to rescue immediately after liquid accident - I got it in less than 30 minutes after the spill.
          It got spilled from behind when the laptop was closed. It mostly affected the rear of the mainboard and the bottom of the LCD.

          I quickly took it apart and washed the liquid residue off the mainboard.
          The area around the UP800 had some light corrosion, but it just washed away with some IPA. Other areas looked undamaged.

          The mainboard got a thorough cleaning, as did the top case and LCD connectors / cables.

          Now the laptop...
