MacBook Air M1 (A2337 / 820-02016) dead - no power, DFU restore fails after iBSS send, good voltages - NAND dead?

Hi everyone, first post here – long-time reader though. I have a dead MacBook Air M1 (2020) that won't charge or power on.

    Device info:
    MacBook Air (M1, 2020)
    Model j313ap (A2337, logic board 820-02016)

    Symptom:
No charging, no power on at all.

    Restore attempts:
Apple Configurator finds the MacBook in DFU mode, as Linux with lsusb: Bus 001 Device 021: ID 05ac:1227 Apple, Inc. Mobile Device (DFU Mode).

It looks like the MacBookAir is in firmware boot loop. I have tried to restore 14.x version and 26.2 (latest) version firmware, but just after iBSS send I see at Dmesg: apple-mfi-fastcharge 1-5: USB disconnect, device number 29

    Device restore shows this:
    Command: idevicerestore -e UniversalMac_26.2_25C56_Restore.ipsw
    Found device in DFU mode
    ECID: 7055480287406366

    Device supports Image4: true
    Variant: Customer Erase Install (IPSW)
This restore will erase all device data.

    Voltage measurements:

LOGIC BOARD DETACHED (NO CONNECTORS EXCEPT USB BOARD):

    PPBUS_AON: 11.96V (C5804)
    PP3V8_AON_VDDMAIN: 3.79V (C5895)
    PP5V_S2: 5.18V (CP717)

LOGIC BOARD IN PLACE AND ALL CONNECTORS:

    PP1V8_S2: 1.796V (JR850)
    PP1V25_S2: 1.223V (JF202 PIN 12)

    Other tests:

    Multiple USB cables/ports tried.

    Question:

Voltages look good. Is this almost certainly dead NAND/SSD or are there other common things to check on 820-02016 boards (e.g. PMIC, SoC ROM, etc.)? Worth trying NAND reball/reflow or is the board scrap?

Thank you in advance for your kind answers.

Locate the NAND flash power rail. Remove all power. Measure the resistance to ground of this power rail. What is the exact resistance in ohms?

Thank you for prompt answer. Here are measurements:

      PP0V88_AWAKE_NAND: 216.0 (FLN001)
      PP1V25_AWAKE_NAND: 215.5 (CN03A)
      PP2V5_AWAKE_NAND: 588 kOhm (RN522, varies)

I found just now that diode D5270 seems to be missing, but that seems to be related to SAVE_BAT_G ....

These rails are ok and no shorts here.

Use a USB-c meter to note the voltage and current draw of this board. Are you at 20v on the power adapter?

I lack a USB-C power meter at the moment, so I'll have to get one. My power adapter is a 65W PD supply (20V/3.25A). I’ve already ruled out the power supply by trying several others.

Ok. Amazon should be ok but be sure it is bidirectional. If available to you, consider the Qianli tail tester sold through Mobile Sentrix (UK) and others on Aliexpress.

            https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005...xoCwb0QAvD_BwE

Want to test if the PD adapter is being configured to offer 20v otherwise there is a fault in the pd controllers on the logic board which are stand alone components.

Today I tried to solder a missing 0201-sized D5270 Zener diode (Zener X3-DFN06) onto the PCB, but the hot-air nozzle on my rework station is too large to melt the Sn63Pb37 solder without causing collateral damage (although I did protect the surrounding components with Kapton tape).

Attached are two graphs from a USB power meter (I wrote a Python script that reads data from the USB meter via Bluetooth and saves it as a graph). In the first one, the meter is on the power supply side, and as can be seen, when the USB connector is plugged in, the current consumption briefly increases and then drops back to around the 100 mA range. At no point does 20 V appear. The same behavior is observed when the meter is on the MacBook side. I also tried pressing the power button, etc., at the same time.

It appears that the PD handshake is indeed not working at all. I am not sure whether the missing diode ultimately affects this, as it seems to be related to battery charging.

Today I was able to solder the diode. Power button do nothing, but restoring firmware kicks 20V up and then drops back to 5V. It seems that now resotre fails to "Unable to place device into recovery mode from DFU mode".

PS5 EDM-031 - Pulsing BLOD - SSD NAND chips never heat up
                  by mattpd
PS5 died in the middle of a game and never would boot again. Pulsing BLOD stays on forever but never boots.

No LM damage. UART gives a generic "APU not responding" error.

Under thermal camera, the SSD NAND chips stay stone cold. The controller warms, but not the NAND. I have a good 2.5v and 1.8v around the NANDs...

I don't have a ton of PS5 experience, but I assume that the NAND would need to warm at least a little bit in order to boot...

So to those with experience, would you expect at least a little heat from the NAND during...

Macbook Pro 2019 A2141 NAND Shorted
                  by mgourgios
Hello. If you could please help me understand what I am doing wrong...

This model, Macbook Pro 2019 16" A2141, 512GB, EMC 3347, with T2 Security Chip, had 4 NAND Chips shorted in 1 wing (U9100, U9200, U9300, U9400) and it has 1 more in the 2nd wing (U8600) BUT NOT shorted. All chips are TSB4227 TOSHIBA-KIOXIA SN4192TWNA12014 BGA110 128GB. I got 4 new nand chips for 1 wing and programmed them by specific position of course with JCID P13 programmer.

I also replaced the tps power ic for the ssd.
Now all rails come up, including the ssd rails 0.9v, 1.8v, 2.5v....
