    ASUS E510KA not charging :(

    Hello everyone

I have a ASUS E510KA (model of the motherboard E410KA R 2.0 ) laptop after liquid damage and I got a problem with charging.

Laptop is working fine when charged battery is connected and there is no issues with anything...except it is not charging batteries ( i have tried two : the old one and new ).

The strange thing is that when power adapter is connected the orange light
( charging led ) appears and it stays orange= meaning that it is theoretically charging, and also under windows the lcd is brighter after the power cable is connected meaning that laptop is seeing the charger.

But it does not want to charge battery

After liquid damage i have cleaned whole motherboard where the liquid was present, ans also i have replaced smd components such as resistors and capacitors with the same values of course to be sure that the corrosion has not eaten in some way that components.

I have also replaced BQ24780S chip...and there is no change the "laptop" still does not charge battery

I have make measurments ( plugged charge with and without battery connected ) on the BQ24780s chip and they are below :

    without bat/ with bat

I have not found any schematic or boardvoew for that motherboard so maybe pictures will be helpful.

I will be very grateful for any help

    Re: ASUS E510KA not charging

What charger IC was onboard on the original board?

Some of the measurements are not matching the pinout and datasheet. For example, pin #28 is the VCC of the charger IC. It should be ~19v or the battery feed if the power adapter is removed. Pin #28 is ~3v3? Is the battery voltage the same as this pin?

Also, pin #1 and #2 voltages should be similar but are not.

Pin #6 is acdet and is often built on a resistor voltage divider. Attach the power adapter and measure this pin again. If the adapter is not detected here, battery will not charge.

      Re: ASUS E510KA not charging

Hi, thank You for reply. Those measurments have been taken with power adapter/ charger plugged in . I have measured with battery connected and without battery connected ( while the charger was plugged in in both cases )

The original charger IC was exactly BQ24780S ( i have changed him 3 times to be exact...with some desoldered from different board and also i got new BQ24780S chips ).

What is also strange that, after i short PIN 1 and PIN 2 the voltage on PIN 1 is still 19,1 but PIN 2 changes into 9,1v and after i unplug battery and charger and connect it again the voltages are as i show above which is PIN 1 19,1V and PIN 2 0,224v. The battery has exactly the same voltage which is 0.224v

Or maybe i did something wrong...maybe i count the pins wrong.

Maybe clockwise is a wrong while numbering pins...

Post a clear pic of the charger IC on your board. Need to confirm the ic was soldered in the proper pin #1 orientation as the original.

Study section 8.2 of the charger IC datasheet. Your logic board will be similar in design. Once pin #1 receives the adapter voltage, pin #2 must follow with the same since there is a milli-ohm current sense resistor between the 2 pins.

For now, do not use the battery and use the adapter only. Does the laptop function with only the power adapter? Suspecting, no. Need to resolve this board to be stable with the power adapter first.

Often, the 2nd DCin mosfet gets damaged but since you have 19v on pin #1, something else is wrong for pin #2 to not have the same voltage.

Remove all power and check the resistance between pin #1 and #2 on the charger IC.

Yes, I think your pin count is wrong. Review the topside of the datasheet diagram and post again. Locate the pin #1 dimple for reference.

Yes, wrong. Need to go counterclockwise direction. Locate the #1 pin which is on the other side. Best to download the datasheet and review the top view of the IC. Then post a fresh list of measurements.

it will be much clearer because i am trying to format those measurments and they are not fully readable in my reply

Ok. Pin #4 is ACDRV and should ~25v to drive the N-channel mosfets.

Locate the 4k resistor on this line and remove it. Then power up again.

What voltage is on pin #4 ?

This is pointing to the case study by @Piernov in the above sticky. If you have 25v after removing the 4k resistor then the DCin mosfets are likely defective. Usually the 2nd one in the power path.

Pins #11 and #12 are also not correct. These are the SMbus lines and should be ~3v3 for each. Remove all power. Meter in resistance mode. Check the resistance to ground for each of these pins. It is possible that the ESD diodes on the battery connector area are zapped and causing this pair to no longer function. Be sure the battery is removed. Best to recheck these 2 pins for their voltage after the battery is disconnected and using only the power adapter.

I have replaced one of the mosfets before and without any change in charging...i was thinking about replacing both of them and i dont know why i did not do that.

Those mosfets are E180AJ and i have replaced the one from picture into AON7380... that was the closest one i have with similar parameters ( but maybe i didnt notice something and it was bad replacement ).

I will try to replace both of them into 7380 and i will see what happens. Give me please a few moments.

woow...look at this . After looking for a PIN4 leg when it is connected...look what i have found

That resistor i think is burned...and i do not know how i missed that.

...it is having 10 ohms. so it is possible that it is damaged ?

Wait. Is this mosfet even connected to pin #4 of the charger IC through a 4k resistor ? Confirm it first.

Yes. Remove the series 4k on pin #4. This burnt resistor is some other that needs to be replaced. With 100 markings, it is a 10 ohm resistor.

Yes, 10 ohms is the correct value for this resistor but this is not the 4k resistor that is often on pin #4.

Can you confirm if this resistor is on pin #4?
