    PS3 not reading discs

    Howdy everyone.

I have a PS3 CECHG03 which has troubles reading discs.
It also used to get stuck on black screen while trying to connect to/install playstore, which I fixed by replacing the HDD.
I have reflashed the firmware from USB, but that did not fix the disc problem.
I tried the console with another two drives ( from ylod-ed consoles, so do not really know if the drives are fine, but the hell are the odds all drives to be dead??? ) but again no joy.
When a disc is inserted, the blue light ( next to the power light ) flashes and then goes to solid blue, so I guess at least the motherboard knows there is a disc present in the drive.
The closest thing to a working drive is getting the tracklist of an audio CD (with two of the drives ). It lists the tracks with their times, but doesn't play them ( after some time shows an error message - "bad data" or smthng ).
Any ideas what might have gone wrong?

Oh, I also switched the PSU because the original one was lil' bit noisy ( audible noisy, have not checked it on the scope though ).

you cant swap the drives, only the mechanicals.
the drive boards have a serial that the console is locked to.

      did you clean the laser?

Thanks for the reply, just came to update with the same conclusion .

I've read previously that PS4 drives were "married" with the mainboards, tried searching about PS3, did not find anything so I thought PS3 was not affected...

I run the original drive without the case and noticed it was not spinning the disc. Installed its board to one of the other drive mechanics and voila - works like a champ.

So the initial problem was caused by faulty mechanics and simple drive switch does not work, but only adds more false symptoms.

well the fat ps3's had a common problem,
the laser sled did not like shocks - if you knocked the consol over or hit it really hard the laser had to be replaced.
i suspect optics, either a lense or mirror breaking loose.

i dont know if newer drives have the same issue.

Do yourself and your vision a huge favor and don't treat lasers lightly, I would never recommend powering on a blu ray drive wtihout its case unless you were wearing frequency-deleting eyeware designed around that laser.

It's unlikely to blind yourself with a reflection from something as low powered, but you can never be too careful.

PS4 Launch Model Disk Drive Issue (disc drive no power won’t accept discs)
                  by steveoski
Hey guys, so I have a weird one. I have been working on PlayStation 4 since they come out. I have fixed almost everything that hasn't required BGA soldering. Just a little background.

Now this particular PS4 had a broken HDMI port. It was replaced and it works perfectly. Upon reassemble the disc drive stopped taking in discs. Now I have seen this before and it has ALWAYS been the BD drive daughter board or the BD drive itself. I first replaced the BD Daughter board to see if the drive would start accepting discs before I started soldering the chip over to a new donor board. Still...

PS5 Disc Not Supported/ Disc Not Recognized Board Num: EDM-020

                  Good Afternoon fellas,

                  Issue:
Disc is showing as not supported when a disc is put in.

Here's what I've done, you can skip this if you just wanna know the question:
                  - replaced with a disc drive from a donor ps5 (honestly questionable if this is known to work)
                  - reflowed the disc drive connector
-reflowed the chip in question (shown on image)
                  - I will say this console was very dusty so it's conceivable that it got so hot that it made the chip joints cold and potentially other things on the board

                  Question:
                  I...

Gamecube DOL-001 Cap Values/Original Cap Models
                  by Alexander Gutsch
                  Hey all!

I need some help identifying the original model of the caps you could see on the pictures below. These all are from a Gamecube and should be replaced as a precaution/repair of the disc drive not reading discs. I know the voltages and capacities are easy to get from most of them, but since I do want to get some high quality replacement parts, I need the ESR or ripple current too to find some equivalent replacements.
I also added a picture of an Excel sheet I made with the designators and the diameters of the caps.
                  Thanks in advance!...

It's 2025: do you know where your 5¼" floppy drives are?
                  by eccerr0r
                  Oh wow.

As in the other thread I was trying to revive/re-bootstrap an old Apple IIe and wasn't successful reading or writing any disk. Both drives behave similarly.

Then I was wondering, what about my PC floppy drives? I have a HH 5¼" HD drive and a combo 5¼+3½ drive. I tried formatting the disk that wouldn't work in the Apple and it didn't work in the PC either!

Then I tried a HD 5.25 disk ... it won't even touch the disk either! Just like the Apple DD disk, "Not Ready!"

Weird. Seems the PC drive is having trouble clamping...
