Re: Palit GTX 980TI working via a riser but not in x16 slot
I have physically covered all contacts after PCIE x1 lanes before inserting into the x16 slot (black electric tape over pcie finger on both sides) but will measure all pairs to be sure.

Palit GTX 980TI working via a riser but not in x16 slot
Hi,
Interesting case, I have a gtx 980ti which suffered typical drmos failure. I replaced it together with 12V PEX switching transistors, all blown fuses etc. No shorts on vcore, vmem, pex or any other rails.
Yet the card does not give any sign of life when plugged into pcie x16 slot unless I plug it in via a mining riser?! I was troubleshooting it using riser as it is easier to measure etc. It worked so I assembled the card put in the computer and no post. When I move it to the riser it works again.
Checked all voltages on PCIE finger 12V, 3V3 while plugged in, PEX_RST goes to 3.2V but it won't post without a riser.
I concentrated around voltage rails since that's what riser does independently of pcie slot via dedicated vregs off sata power connector but I don't seem to find any low resistances or shorts alltogether. In both configurations all voltages are present and PEX_RST goes high.
I have even taped/covered the x16 connector on the card after A/B18 leaving just 1x lanes connecting but still no post without a riser.
Any clues? Thanks.

by DynaxSCHi,
I have this board, where I have exchanged the LGA1151 socket. During testing I discovered, that the large PCIEX16 slot won't by no force work in x16 mode, but keeps to work in x8 mode only.
I tested this with GPU-Z, also with Render Test (but tried also Furmark and Heaven Benchmark - no effect).
Tested on Core i5-9600K as well as on an Pentium G5420 and MSI NVIDIA GTX1070 and 2 other cards, including RTX3060Ti.
Board architecture definitely allows x16 mode, as all 16 PCIe lanes are present between CPU and main GPU slot (nearest to CPU).

by whc14765Hey,
I have a Gigabyte 980TI Windforce. No shorts on the main 8 pin PCIE power connectors. The 8 phase buck converter inductors are showing 2.5ohms.
The card doesn't power up at all - no lights, no fans, nothing. I noticed that all of the 8 phase inductors are showing 0V. I couldn't find a fuse for the 8pin power connectors.
I did notice that the PCIE x16 connector 12V line has a fuse F3 (10A marked on it) which is blown. It is reading 16ohms on one end.
1st Question: Is there some logic on the board that checks the 12V on the PCIE x16 bus connector... -
by DynaxSCHi,
I have got for repair a Gigabyte GTX 1080Ti which has been exposed to mouse piss, I mean a real living mouse, that declared the PC case for her home. Unfortunately she was not behaving civilized, and pissed on the card making some minor electrolysis demage only to the very surface of some soldering points and leaving some dirt on the card. It was not a big deal, only minor visible effects, only on the bottom pcb side, after cleaning it is almost not visible. The card even started to work, however there are issues with the pcie bus, so the card works only in pcie x4, or x2 mode,... -
Hi there,
I am looking for help with my broken 980ti. Had a bad DrMos (the bottom one) and replaced it, card worked for a short moment, but I got another shortes DrMos (second one) and replaced that one aswell.
Now I don't measure any shorts, I have 12v, PEX, 5v, 3.3v all working fine (probing points on card), but I can't get any voltage at FBVDDQ or NVVDD probing points.
Where could I check to find the fault?
You think my first DrMos could be bad, because I read that the first one will activate core?
Don't want to replace that one when I can just test other...05-11-2024, 10:41 AM -
